  • Back to the Future

    Funded Jan 18, 2012

Thank you for helping my classroom get Back to the Future! My classroom has changed since getting this phenomenal tool. Why? Because...technology provides students the opportunity to develop tools and skills they need in order to explore and succeed in society. My students are already becoming more computer literate. They are also becoming confident in their research and usage of the computer. I have downloaded Apps to spark curiosity and make learning fun! In addition, I have access to multimedia programs that can visually teach math, language arts, and even writing.

Here is a typical day now that I have the iPad 2 and my document reader. We start off with math - or Splash Math as it is called. We work on the math standards and play a game for points. Next, I might go on the Khan Academy App and watch a video that reinforces the lessons I just taught. After recess, we watch a Brain Pop video and take a quiz. Brain Pop exposes them to history, science, and other subjects that we don't normally get to. Soon after, we move on to writing. I might show the students examples of a narrative or the rules of dialogue. Finally, we will access the Treasures website and use the presentation pages to reinforce vocabulary or work on grammar lessons.

The iPad 2 is a wonderful tool that has changed my teaching. It motivates the students and helps them learn in new and exciting ways. The kids stay in at recess to practice their multiplication tables or read books form the Kindle App. We thank you for you generosity!

    With gratitude,

    Mrs. Smith

  • School Supply Rock!

    Funded Dec 27, 2011

Thank you again for your generous donations to School Supply Rock! It was like Christmas in January. A few weeks after Winter Break, box after box was delivered to our room. It was such a joy to rip open the boxes to see what was inside. The students were so grateful that our wishes had been fulfilled.

The students loved all of the much-needed school supplies! The pencil sharpener is used lovingly everyday! Now instead of finding a pencil sharpener to use during recess, I stay inside the classroom to give students a place to hang out, read, or play games. The electric stapler makes stapling a breeze. Their papers look better, and it makes planning for homework easy. The brightly colored paper has been used numerous times during art. We are currently making Greek vases for our Open House. In addition, the jump ropes and other physical education supplies have made P.E. more varied and fun. All of the school supplies on the list have made our current school year better and will make next year run more smoothly.

Thank you once again for funding School Supply Rock. It's because of people like you that the world is a better place!”

    With gratitude,

    Mrs. Smith

  • The Comic Book Club Episode II: The Quest for Books

    Funded Dec 14, 2011

Thank you for your generous donations to my classroom. The graphic novels that you donated have inspired my kids to read. We received the spectacular box of books on Monday and the kids have been reading them nonstop. They have stayed in at recess, borrowed them at lunch, and have even stayed after school to READ!!! I specifically chose a wide variety of graphic novels including classics like Cinderella, The Little Prince, and The Hardy Boys to open their world and give them a different perspective on graphic novels. Hopefully, as the students create their comic strips, they will be inspired by these books.

Our school district is currently facing a budget shortfall. I would have never been able to purchase these books and start The Comic Book Club without your help. The educational system is so caught up in data and testing that we no longer explore the creative aspects of education. These books will help my students explore and use their imagination. In addition, The Comic Book Club and its resources will keep these students interested in learning and give them an outlet to be creative.

Without donors like you, thousands of classrooms would go without.”

    With gratitude,

    Mrs. Smith

  • The Comic Book Club

    Funded Sep 30, 2011

Thank you again for your generous donations to The Comic Book Club! We are now eight weeks into our comic book adventure, and the students' projects are beginning to take on a life of their own. They are thriving in this creative environment, and it is giving them a much-needed outlet from the current test-driven world of education.

We've spent time analyzing story arcs, creating our own plot lines and characters, developing visual-arts skills, and writing scripts. The students are currently planning shot lists for their comics. The next step in their journey is to work on and complete their comics. I cannot wait to see their final products!

The colorful bean bags and rotating book rack you helped purchase have been a huge hit with our students. They now have a spot to call their own. I have students from all over the school coming in during their recess and lunch times to read. They quietly go to the back corner, easily select a book from the very accessible book rack, and lounge on the comfy bean bags. Their appetite for this ever-changing media is insatiable! They would rather read and relax than play. Watching their imaginations blossom in The Comic Book Club has been a blessing. It motivates me to work harder for them. And in turn, the reading corner motivates them to READ, READ, READ!!!

As I mentioned , we're just beginning to put everything together, but please continue to look for updates and photos of our students' work throughout the year at The Comic Book Club fan page at Facebook:

My name is Mrs. Smith, and I love to teach! I am always thinking about and planning new lessons in order to make learning challenging and fun. Our school receives Title 1 funds, and many students come from impoverished and immigrant backgrounds. My goal is to prepare my students to think critically about issues, ideas, and topics that are important to them. I encourage creativity by providing an environment where it is good to think differently and invent new possibilities. In addition, it is my goal to prepare my students in 21st century skills by collaborating on projects, using computational thinking skills to solve problems, and to be digital citizens of the world.
