  • Marine Debris Musical: STEM, Theater & Planet Stewardship

    Funded Nov 13, 2024

Please accept our heartfelt thanks and deep gratitude for your generosity and support for "Marine Debris Musical: STEM, Theater & Planet Stewardship." Our students are busy choosing the class themes and making the props for the musical that will take place in April (2025). In the STEAM Lab, each fourth-grade class chose a specific ocean zone and animals unique to that ocean zone for their part in the musical. After researching the ocean animals, students have started working on their props in the art room. The cardboard used for the props is first prepared using Gesso on large sheets of cardboard donated by Lowe's. The prepared cardboard is then cut into shapes of the ocean animals and then painted with the neon paint purchased with your generous support. In the next few months, students will finish making the props then begin working with our music teacher to create a musical. It has been such a special opportunity for our students to work collaboratively with other 4th-grade students, and across subject areas including Science, Art, and Music. Many of you have students at our school and we can't wait to share the musical with fellow students, parents, family members, and our community in April. Your generous support means so much to our students and our school. Thank you for dreaming with us and supporting our vision to bring art, music, STEM, and stewardship to our wonderful 4th grade students. We are so grateful!”

  • Take Home Summer STEM Kits

    Funded Aug 18, 2023

We are deeply grateful for your generous gift to our students and STEM program. With supplies from this project, we built take-home STEM kits for our elementary school students. Each kit included items for students to complete engineering challenges, such as building the strongest table, designing wind and solar cars, or engineering an airplane that can do stunts. With these kits, our students used their creativity, imagination, and innovative thinking to engineer planes, cars, tables, and bookmarks. These projects allowed students to engage in engineering while learning about topics like solar energy and wind energy and designing strong structures. Thank you for supporting our students as they learn about science, technology, engineering, and math. Thank you for supporting science education and for believing in our future. We are grateful for your generosity!”

  • Energy Essentials: Circuits, Coding, Robots, and, Cars.

    Funded Dec 12, 2022

Thank you for generously supporting our students as they learn about energy, energy transformations, robots, and coding. Since receiving the snap circuits, remote control vehicles, Scratch Jr. coding cards, and robots, our students have created electric circuits, built an electric car, and learned to code using Scratch Jr. The electric cars were a highlight for our students. They built electric cars and modified them to use either a battery or solar to move. Your support has allowed our students to have fun while learning. In addition to the hands-on learning, our students are working in teams, collaborating to solve problems, and learning to think like scientists. Thank you for supporting our students and for encouraging them to love science through hands-on learning. We are so grateful!”

  • Bright Lights & Neon: A First Lego League Robotics Festival

    Funded Dec 12, 2022

Thank you for generously supporting our First Lego League (FLL) teams! Our students are so excited to use robots and love learning to code. They are working hard to develop their mission models and create innovative codes to solve problems. We started our FLL season in October and will finish in late April. Throughout the season, we celebrated their successes and learning by recognizing excellence in teamwork, innovation, and creativity. We have also encouraged them to deepen their learning through in-house field trips (we had Duke Energy visit the STEAM Lab to learn about solar panels) and visits from experts (our local Navy Lab has been instrumental in providing experts to help us learn). Thank you for supporting our learning. We have big plans to celebrate the season with a neon party. Thank you for encouraging our students and for supporting science education. We are so grateful!”

  • It's Electric! Coding, Robotics, and Circuits for Elementary Students

    Funded Jan 11, 2022

Our students were so excited to work with SNAP circuits and magnets and they are especially excited to learn about robotics. They cheered when I showed them the boxes of SNAP circuits and magnets and they loved earning stickers and pencils for their hard work. In the STEAM Lab, we have used the SNAP circuits to learn about electricity and energy transformations. Our students love building circuits and they love creating structures using magnets. Seeing them engaged and focused on their learning is one of the most exciting parts of teaching young learners. Your generosity brought much-needed hands-on science materials to our students. Thank you for supporting science education and most of all, thank you for supporting young learners as they discover and explore through hands-on learning. We are deeply grateful for your generosity and hope you know you have placed a big smile on so many young faces!”

    With gratitude,

  • Putting the Fun into First LEGO League Robotics

    Funded Mar 16, 2022

Thank you for putting a big, huge, smile on the faces of our third-grade First Lego League robotics team! They have been working since September to design, create, and innovate solutions to the issues with cargo. They have learned about coding and robotics and how to work together as a team. The team was surprised with a party to celebrate the end of their (first) First Lego League season. The look on their faces when they entered the STEAM Lab was priceless. They squealed with excitement when they saw the decorations and danced around the room to music. They also shared their gratitude for all of the wonderful things they received. With your generous support, each student received a medal and goodie bag, and the team received a large trophy as recognition for their accomplishments this season. Celebrating their success was so much fun and we are grateful to you for your generous support. Having fun is an important part of learning. Thank you for bringing the this incredible experience to our amazing third-grade robotics team!”

In my STEAM Lab, elementary students learn through hands-on inquiry-based science. A normal day in our lab includes designing and creating models to understand scientific and engineering concepts or conducting an investigation on soil erosion. Through this learning, students practice thinking and acting like a scientist. My goal is to encourage a lifelong love for science while encouraging young learners to become innovators, creators, and critical thinkers. Funding a hands-on inquiry-based science lab is a challenge. We need help with everyday supplies and with larger purchases that allow students to pursue science learning in meaningful ways.
