Every child loves to draw or color. In fact, when children cannot communicate, they often draw pictures or symbols in order to help get their point across. During our writing time, I encourage our scholars to draw what they are writing as it helps them understand the concept of being an author, as well as an illustrator. Our school has very limited basic art supplies (crayons, markers etc.) to where students are having to share very few markers or colored pencils between nearly 30 children. These seemingly simple art tools mean so much to young children and make them more excited to learn. Having art supplies to help student writing will help further enhance those scholars who are already excelling, but it will also help those students who may be struggling and are just about to emerge. Tools as simple as colorful markers and crayons can make the difference to a child, especially a first grader who has never had their own set of crayons or markers before! During writing time, I am envisioning my students becoming even more excited about writing because they can describe their stories with colorful illustrations. My students will also benefit greatly using these items during or science lessons as well. We do a lot of hands-on activities that require cutting and pasting. With very limited glue sticks and scissors, these projects are extremely hard to accomplish. Scissors, glue sticks, markers and more will help us become even more successful in our lessons!
