These materials will give my class humor and perspective. They will help my students invest in their own learning by way of games, projects, manipulatives, and visuals.
With these supplies, I can go beyond pen, paper, and textbook to be the kind of teacher that gives her students memorable lessons. I have picked out a giant map with movable parts and pins, clay to create miniature imitations of ancient greek art pieces with them, a humorous memento of Caeser's demise, and some games to help them understand ancient trade networks and the rise of empires.
I will use the 3D map to emphasize, remap, or overlap borders with washi tape or other tools, as we will be studying antiquity and the borders will look different over time. I may also tape over images, visual clues for the students to understand cultural hearths. I cannot do this on a paper map. The durable material of the map will ensure its practicality for this and its place in my classroom for years to come.
I will use the clay and clay tools for several different projects. Not only will I use it for a miniature sculpture project, but for an Egyptian pyramid project, stone tablet project, and many other activities of this sort!
I will use Inca Catan as a special treat/ learning activity when we study the pre-modern civilizations of the Americas, to reinforce student understanding of the trade. In a similar manner, I will use Civilizations for a group-based special project so that my students can put empire-building into perspective and really get excited about history through a competitive experimental lesson.
My subject area is the history of the antiquity and geography, which are not easy subjects to teach and my students will need all the stimulation they can receive.
