  • Miss, Do You Have Any Funny Books?

    Funded Oct 21, 2021

Thank you so much for sharing the gift of books with us. We love having options for the famous "Chapter Book Friday" that occurs every week in my class. Students have snapped up the copies of fun, funny, light-hearted texts faster than any others on my shelf. They seem to love the opportunity to take a break from the serious work of growing up and catching up in a pandemic. Instead, we pause for a moment and giggle at jokes, ask "what if?" and realized a book can make a difference.

Thank you, so much, for thinking of us.”

    With gratitude,

    Mrs. Rowley

  • Kindred and Modern Fantasy Stories

    Funded Oct 12, 2021

Thank you so much for supporting my classroom. Students just checked out the book on Friday. They were amazed -- the books are new! I was so pleased to be able to share a brand-spanking-new book with them.

Graphic novels have been in the spotlight recently in the media. One reason might be that these texts are at the forefront of confronting issues and topics that other texts might ignore or hide. I am so glad we get to read an important, award-winning novel that offers insights into the repercussions of history, even in our present day.

Thank you for supporting us! We appreciate you.”

    With gratitude,

    Mrs. Rowley

  • Catch Up on Reading With a Graphic Novel

    Funded Aug 12, 2021

I am so thankful that we have the books we need to engage all students in our Fantasy and Science Fiction course. Kindred is not just a story about time travel, but also a story about family and history and being American. It is the perfect text to share and read as we consider the present climate in the United States as well as the future our students would like to see.

Also, and this is no small point, I am so thrilled to open the world of Octavia Butler to my students. She can change their lives and I am thankful to share her writing with them.”

  • Animal Farm: Lessons for Today

    Funded Aug 12, 2021

Animal Farm was a hit. I currently have a team of giggly freshmen who call themselves the Mollies and demand sugar and ribbons from everyone. Is that the message we intended to share? Not quite. Is it AMAZING to see kids smiling and hear them laughing in person on campus at a school this year? Yes. A thousand times yes.

This novel is exactly what we needed to build community and share ideas about oppression, prejudice, and following the crowd. Students made connections to themselves (and even video game trash talk) and the novel. They saw a new world. It was wonderful. Thank you so much!”

  • Black Panther: Changing and Leading

    Funded Aug 26, 2021

I cannot even begin to tell you how wonderful my students are this year. They are critical, excited, and creative. They want to jump into reading and are not afraid to discuss big topics our readings present.

We are moving into the best time of year: in the spring we start fantasy and science fiction. Your donation smooths the way. We will read the amazing work of Coates and connect it to real philosophical concepts and world issues.

Students who are not even in my class beg to borrow the book. It is a testament to your belief in literacy and students, here alive in our class every day. Thank you so much!”

    With gratitude,

    Mrs. Rowley

  • Essentials for a New Year

    Funded Aug 9, 2021

It is AMAZING to have students back in the classroom. I rarely say this, but I was right. It was a rough transition. My current freshmen have not been in school since 7th grade. The last full school year they completed was in the 6th grade. They are young in so many ways.

We spent (and spend) a lot of time every day making sure kids are okay. It has been tough. Your donation meant we didn't have to worry about small things like supplies. We could focus on the big needs our kids have this year as they adjust to life back on campus.

Your support has meant so much during this difficult time. You made kids feel safe and loved. That is an excellent first step for any difficult journey.”

    With gratitude,

    Mrs. Rowley

  • A Copy of Romeo and Juliet for Every Student

    Funded May 4, 2021

You cannot imagine how excited I was to return to the classroom after months of online teaching. Students were nervous about being on campus and sometimes struggled to get organized.

Having copies of the play ready was such a huge help; students didn't have to worry about supplies. Romeo and Juliet helped us connect in person. We laughed, groaned, and gasped as the characters stumbled through life. The jokes we made at Romeo's expense are the kind of jokes that every 9th grader deserves to make. We played games and wrote essays. We needed the time in class together and you helped us use it well. Thank you so much for your support.”

  • Girls Who Code: Making Memories Together

    Funded Apr 1, 2021

Thank you so much for supporting our team. It was such a strange school year and I cannot begin to explain how much hope it gave me to see students who had never met work together to build a club.

The Girls Who Code Club on campus worked through some pretty advanced app building and wrote lines of code in order to make it happen. We used Android Digital Studio and lots of Youtube videos to make it happen. Our senior members really led the club and they did such a great job.

When we returned to school in the spring, it was amazing to meet the club members and give them their sweaters. In a bittersweet way, it closed out the year for us. Thank you so much for your support. It made a big difference to some lonely kids who wanted to learn.”

    With gratitude,

    Mrs. Rowley

  • Fresh Fiction: Do You See Yourself on Our Shelf?

    Funded Jan 30, 2021

WE GET TO RETURN TO SCHOOL! I want to shout it from the rooftops! I am so thrilled that some students will come back to my classroom when they feel ready and able to do so. When they return, your books will smile at them from our shelves.

During our online classes, I preview books that might interest students. Now, they are organized on our shelves for easy access. I cannot wait for students to realize it is real and they can take them home.

This is such a wonderful gift for my students: this is a reminder that school is a safe, wonderful place to come together and learn. I am so thankful that you thought of us.”

    With gratitude,
