Each of these items has a different use for assisting my little ones to become aware and learn to work through their emotions, feelings, and traumas. Research shows that using a dollhouse in both “free play” and assessment, help the student to show parallel parts to their lives within the doll house. It is often easier for younger students to “show” what is happening in their lives rather than tell. A weighted blanket is used frequently to reduce anxiety and stress. When a student comes to my office and is dysregulated and needs help calming down, a weighted blanket would be a great tool to be able to use. Play therapy is a huge part of my practice at this school, through being able to play games with the students I am able to build report and trust, help the students find heathier ways to communicate, and find a more natural form of expression rather than talking. Games can also help build social skills, control anger, and assist in developing coping strategies and creative problem-solving skills. Books are another huge tool I use with the students. Some students struggle with social cues and boundaries with their peers. Being able to read stories where they can embody the character helps learn about their thoughts and emotions and empathize how others may be feeling. All of these items will be used in both individual and group therapeutic sessions for pre-k-5th. By having these items and being able to use them in a safe environment we will be able to explore deeper into the behaviors and troubles that are causing a disrupt in their lives and educational time. We will be able to better support each student academically as well when we are assured basic needs and mental health needs are being met.
