  • Bringing Back the Classroom Library

    Funded Nov 14, 2024

Thank you for donating to this project.

Because our Media Centers and school libraries are thinning out, and many being abandoned altogether for collaboration spaces and extra-large class spaces, this generation of students are not in proximity to timeless texts.

However, because of your generosity, the classroom library has a chance to survive and fill the need to make sure that our students are able to access literature. The texts that you helped put on the shelves are classics that students can dive into and connect with.

Routinely, students stop into my classroom and ask to borrow books to read. Many of my students have taken these books home, devoured them, and return for others. Another wonderful side effect of this project are the students who are not assigned to me, stopping by and asking for a certain book because their friend recommended it.

Becuase of your help, we have noticed a bit of a reading renaissance this year that we hope to continue fostering. Thank you again for helping to support this project. I could not have done this without you.”

    With gratitude,

    Mrs. Ellis

  • Living in a Digital World, but Students Aren't Materially-Prepared

    Funded Jun 25, 2024

Thank you for your donations to this project. I know that it took a while, but I finally received the shipment of Canon ink and students have already begun to request assignments, photos, infographics, and flyers be printed. As one of my students aptly put it, "this will get me my A in Mrs. T's class."

Because printer ink is so expensive, your donation has allowed me to use school funds and classroom assistance programs for more common consumables, like paper, pencils, notebooks, and markers.

I am so thankful for your help and urge you to continue to look for projects on DonorsChoose that you can help fund. Consider adopting a classroom - my classroom! I jest (not really), but your contributions truly makes a difference.”

  • Give Comfort and Peace of Mind after an Unexpected Accident

    Funded Apr 14, 2024

Thank you for donating to this project. Already, students at my school are aware of this resource and are sharing with their friends who are in need. As of today, three of the pants that were donated have been given to students in need.

Because of your generous donations, those three students were directly supported and given comfort and peace of mind. Thank you!

Donating to educational causes is always appreciated. Funding for education is a constant source of anxiety. So, giving to teachers, schools, and students helps to reduce that anxiety and help make sure that our children are taken care of. Again, thank you!”

    With gratitude,

    Mrs. Ellis

  • Expanding Views with All The Light We Cannot See!

    Funded Dec 1, 2023

Thank you so much for supporting this project.

As a result of your donations, students were able to engage in historical fiction, learn about the Holocaust and WWII from a different perspective, and research the intersection of real historical artifacts and events with historically-influenced fictional characters and their stories.

Students held deeply personal, interesting, and academic conversations about the effects of war on nations, cities, families, and friendships. We discussed what it means to be a hero and whether or not a person can be redeemed from engaging in, passively supporting, or just witnessing genocide. Through this text, students were able to express their thoughts, connect them with their influences and inspirations, and listen and hear others' ideas while supporting or challenging their own and others perspectives.

This was a incredibly fruitful unit and without your support it would not have been possible. Thank you.”

  • Brilliance of Orchids: Building a Botany Bibliotheca

    Funded Oct 13, 2021

Thank you so much for your support of the 'Brilliance of Orchids' project!

My students were able to use the resources that your contributions helped provide to research, learn, and apply best practices for their Epidendrum nocturnum orchids. As of today, the project has proved to be incredibly successful. We anticipated a 10% survival rate for the outplanted orchids and currently 83% of our orchids are attached, growing, and thriving!

Currently, my students are using your resources to help plan out a business plan for another community outplanting. With the resources that your contributions helped to provide, their plans are rooted more deeply to scientifically-verified information and, with the information that they have learned through their own research, they can more accurately predict success in planned outplanting.

Thank you for all of your support.”

    Mrs. Ellis

  • Brilliance of Orchids: Restoration and Conservation

    Funded Oct 4, 2021

Thank you so much for your support!

As a result of your donations, students have been able to plant 26 epidendrum nocturnum orchids back into the mangrove hammock surrounding our school. All of the orchids (except for one) are thriving in their native habitats.

Students have used this project as an opportunity to understand the mangrove hammock ecosystem, build their botanical knowledge, and make strides towards effective conservation in our local community. More than that, students have built relationships with each other, collaborating to figure out the best ways to support their orchids, and sharing their best practices with each other.

Students are also using this knowledge to plan for outplantings in other areas of our community, including local parks and neighborhoods. So, the impact of this project will continue to ripple and our neighbors will be able to benefit from this project for years to come.”

    With gratitude,

    Mrs. Ellis

When people think of orchids, what comes to mind are exceptionally beautiful, showy inflorescence (group of flowers) that brightens up the corner table in a room. The fact is that the vast majority of orchids in the United States are hybridize, cultivated specimens - bred to be rich in color, strong in smell, and full in flower. Because of their popularity, wild orchids have been ripped from their trees and from their ground and placed in private collections. This has happened to such a degree that wild, native orchids have largely disappeared from their natural habitats. This project endeavors to teach my students, not only about the biology and morphology of orchids, but also the history, and ethnobotanical uses of orchids. Students will use these materials to assist them in reintroducing native orchids back into their natural habitats. Students will participate in trainings, outplantings, maintenance, research, and data collection. The goal is to encourage the survival of these reintroduced orchids by collaborating and sharing researched best practices and find methods that will ensure the success of all reintroduced native orchids species.
