Many people--both students and teachers alike--feel like earth science is dry, boring content just filled with a bunch of old, dusty rocks and dirt. Add to this the challenge of teaching early adolescents, many of whom are just learning English as newly minted American citizens and those who demonstrate a wide array of learning disabilities, and you tend to end up with a long school year if you don't try new things. By creating video clips that showcase various earth science phenomena and through interviews with experts in the field, I will be able to hook students into a topic and lay the groundwork for understanding concepts that are often abstract in nature. An additional level of support for emerging English language learners and struggling students will be the ability to post these videos in an archive on our Google Classroom; students can review the concepts being addressed at their own pace and have them available any time. By utilizing a Go Pro HERO5 camera to capture footage of local earth science phenomena and interviews with experts in the field over the summer and throughout the course of the school year, students will be exposed to the real-life applications of the curriculum taught in class in a unique way. Using an extension pole that can reach up to 40 feet will gather all types of footage, and the QuikKey USB-C micro SD card will allow for footage to be uploaded onto our Google Classroom with ease. Students may be able to develop specific questions to pose to scientists that agree to be interviewed as well as requesting topics to be explored in our local environment.
