  • I Am an English Language Learner

    Funded Dec 22, 2024

Second grade is the year my students learn about important people from the past and that are still alive. The I Am books by Brad Meltzer are their absolute favorite to use to do their research.

This year I have a newcomer from Mexico who loves to learn and participate, but sometimes the text in English makes in more difficult for her to work at the same pace. She was so excited to see the same books her classmates were reading available for her in Spanish. Her group was all able to read the same text and complete their project successfully.

Most importantly, this gave gave her the confidence to take on a stronger group role and have more say in the project. She was able to contribute when other times she has just shyed away. Thank you for allowing her confidence to soar by making texts that are accessible in her home language.”

  • Resources to Support Science of Reading

    Funded Nov 19, 2024

Thank you for supporting our class with resources that allow their reading skills to strengthen and develop.

This year my students expressed a desire to do a novel study and your donation allowed us to have the best resources to do so. We were able to find multiple resources to support out reading of Stuart Little. They are working on not only expanding their vocabulary, but using all the needed strategies for reading comprehension. For example, they made plot rollercoasters in groups and cause and effect games.

We are able to do quick checks for understanding after each chapter to ensure students are truly understanding what they read. They actually enjoy doing this!”

  • Mouth the Sound!

    Funded Nov 19, 2024

Thank you so much for allowing us to grow in our phonics skills and development. As a teacher, I have been finishing up a two year program to ensure reading success with my students through the science of reading applications. Having students practice making the sounds with correct tongue, lip, and mouth formation is vital for them to understand decoding.

As soon as the materials arrived, my students interest was high and they couldn't wait to try them. We practice our vowel valley everyday while watching hoe our mouth changes shape as we say all the different sounds in the hand mirrors. Having individual phonics mats for each of them that allow them to encode and manipulate the sounds visually has been transforming in their reading and spelling.

Thank you so much for supporting our class in their desire to be the best readers they can be!”

  • Charge Me Up Before You Go Go! Part 2

    Funded Sep 11, 2023

The ability to charge our devices up around the room without a cumbersome cart, has been so helpful. Every device has a spot and we still have plenty of room to continue to work around the room. No one is worried that they do not have a device that is charged and my students are able to manage their organization all on their own.

This charging station has allowed my students the freedom to use their technology in much more meaningful ways because they always have access. They are learning to be more responsible with the ways we keep them stored and take ownership of keeping it sorted. Thank you again for helping us!”

  • We Like To Read It, Read It

    Funded Jan 27, 2023

This year my students reading levels vary from PK all the way to 5th. Having decodable to use with them has truly helped build their confidence. When working with my reading groups, I am able to choose exactly what phonics skill we are working on and they get to fluently read a book! They are excited to read a new story each week and see their progress in learning the new skills.

A few students in particular are taking true ownership of these books. They ask to take them home so they can read the story to their parents.

These have been the perfect resource to help my students gain the skills they need, but most importantly the positive attitude to be a reader.”

  • Crack The Code With Rime Magic

    Funded Aug 10, 2022

Rime Magic has been a wonderful resource in our classroom building our phonics skills. My students are highly engaged and come right to the carpet when they see me pull out the cards. The biggest growth I have seen from them is with prefixes and suffixes. They are able to use much stronger vocabulary in their own writing and understand how to build words from root words.

My students who came in barely reading are able to build words fluently are have jumped in their confidence. Two of my students love to get the cards and quiz each other.

Thank you so much for this resource that has helped my students continue to grow and develop in their reading!”

  • A Magical Start to a Magical School Year

    Funded Aug 3, 2022

Thank you so much for helping us inquire and team build as a new classroom family. Making our bracelets and predicting the outcome was the perfect opportunity to discuss the scientific method and introduce our units of inquiry. Many of my students were completely surprised that their magic bracelets changed color when we went outside!

My students love the book All the Ways To Be Smart because it highlights all their differences in learning styles. Most importantly they love how it validates their strengths and what each person in our class brings to the group.

Thank you again for giving us a magical start to the new year!”

  • Sit, Lean, and Learn Comfortably! Part 1

    Funded Oct 11, 2022

Having spots around the classroom to meet the different needs of my students makes such a huge difference in their engagement and learning. My students absolutely love having these seats to sit on tables at the floor or just on the carpet closer to the board. There is never a time they are are not in use by my students.

We know have enough of these seats for all my students to use one when they need to and it helps with groups and not arguing. They were so excited to see that everyone would be able to use these if they wanted.

Thank you again for helping our classroom be a place that my students can learn in the best ways for them.”

    With gratitude,

    Ms. HLichtman

Sparking a love of reading is harder to do once a child passes third grade. They should be reading chapter books primarily and feel ashamed if they are still in picture books. Building a class library that includes grade level biographies, motivational books, and others that really maintain their interests in hard to keep up with new books. These books will impact my students by exposing them to a greater variety of books that are engaging, educational, and most of all available. I often am asked if they can take my library books home because they don't have anything to read. I would love to have more options for them so they ALWAYS have something to read at home.
