No one can learn to the best of their ability if their basic needs are not met. Many of our students come to school hungry. This can lead to lack of concentration and behavioral issues. Giving our students healthy snacks also helps our students feel connected and supported by the school and staff, and this fosters a better community and school family. I am also getting a master's level intern from the University of Texas School of Social Work to support more student's next semester and I want to have materials for them to use with students. Children with mental health issues often need art and sensory materials to process their feelings. With the glitter, glue and clear jars, we make glitter jars. We learn about the science of the brain and how through breathing and grounding activities, children can be more in control of their emotions. With the air dry clay and kinetic sand students are able to process emotions and learn self regulation. Meeting students' needs leads to better academic and behavioral outcomes not only at school, but sets the child up for a lifetime of success. We are dedicated to our students to send them to and through college, and we must start with building a strong foundation.
