  • Mastering Mindfulness Through Yoga & Zen Journals

    Funded Sep 12, 2018

    Thank you for making my Yoga and Zen Mindfulness project possible!! The material that you help provide through your generous donation are making it possible for the children to benefit from becoming more mindful for the rest of their lives. All of the tools and books will last for many years; and the children in my classroom will learn with these supplies year after year. Thank you for again supporting a project that will change students lives!! We can't wait for the material to arrive.”

    With gratitude,

    Ms. Hanson

  • Kids with Special Needs & A Document Camera

    Funded Aug 29, 2014

    Dear supporters;

    Thank you so much for your financial support to bring our classroom the Document (camera) Presenter. At the beginning of the year my staff assignment changed, so that I worked with second and third grade students instead of the older students that I had anticipated. I adjusted my goals for younger students in order to provide them with the full benefit of this wonderful technology that you helped procure. The response of the children and the success of the Document (camera) Presenter (DP) was everything I had hoped for.

    The students were enthusiastic to use the DP (Document Presenter) to share with their peers what they wrote or to share how they solved math problems. I never ran out of volunteers to share. The students share their research, their responses to writing prompts, their answers to academic questions, and their thought processes in solving math problems. As presenters they have the opportunity to practice their oratory skills, and answer peer and teacher questions as they stand at the DP. Every student has the opportunity to be the center of attention--in a good way. Working with the DP motivates students to finish their work and do their best. It is a wonderful tool for reinforcing communication skills, clarifying thinking while in front of a group, and garnering respect for other presenters. The DP is a student-friendly tool that motivates all students, increases on-task engagement, improves communication skills, and reinforces what they are learning.

    All students, including the ones who live with learning disabilities, benefit from increased engagement and motivation. The DP encourages student thoughtfulness and communication skills. It let each student be a star. The students love the experience, and I can see how much they benefit from your gift. We all love the Document Presenter. Thank you for making this possible!”

    With gratitude,

    Ms. Hanson

Our school has 95% free or reduced lunches. This indicates that our neighborhood is economically challenged. 65+% of our students are minority members. My third, fourth, and fifth grade students require special education services for reading, writing and math. My class is made-up of students who struggle with foundational skills, and need instruction that specializes in meeting their needs. My students range in ability from Kindergarten to third grade. They need extra support, encouragement, and motivation to assist them in making the greatest gains they can with the disabilities that they are learning to cope with. Although they have to work harder than most of their peers to try to learn their lessons, they are learning to persevere, not lose hope, and do their best.
