At the beginning of each school year, my students fill out a questionnaire asking them various questions about their musical experiences. One of these questions asks if they play a musical instrument or not and if not, what instrument would they like to learn how to play. The most popular answer for this question is that they would like to learn to play the guitar. I want my students to learn to play the guitar because I believe that it will keep them engaged in learning while playing popular songs that they listen to on the radio, creating their own songs, and having fun! Learning to play the guitar will benefit my students in many ways, not just in music class, but in all areas of education! Learning a musical instrument increases memorization and comprehension skills. It improves hand-eye coordination and mathematical skills. It will also help with time management and organizational skills. Playing music has also been shown to reduce stress, which will be extremely helpful to many of my students.
