My students want to talk to each other, but they struggle finding common ground.... but they all have one thing they all love in common--play food. As a first year teacher, I do not have many items for play for indoor recess and brain-break times, but when play food was introduced into my classroom, I was surprised by the level of interest it communicated. When one of my students grabbed a tissue to put the play food bin "in the oven," I knew that my other students could soon follow suit if the play material is familiar enough. I realized I could foster this imaginative play to be collaborative, be focused on real-world applications, and to sneakily add in the concept of money in there. With this grocery stand, I hope to expose my students to real jobs and roles, real-world interactions, and imaginative play that can foster student-lead relationships. This interactive grocery stand features a refrigerator (which introduces the life skill of discriminating food that needs to be refrigerated/ kept at room temperature), a scanner for the food that beeps, a working calculator on the cashier's side (to introduce addition once we add price stickers on the play food), a working signature screen for the customer (practice writing names), and a working conveyer belt for the cashier to turn, just for fun! This grocery stand can help them better understand the world around them while also being a fun activity for them to engage in during brain-breaks and recess.
