Feed My After-School Community
Funded Jun 6, 2024Thank you for supporting my after school club! I am now one of only 3 clubs that meet at my school. I have a regular group of 10-15 students in addition to occasional visitors. One student is the older sister of my student from last year and it has been great to get to know her. She said that she attends because of her brother encouraging her to. She also told me that she mainly attends so that she doesn't have to go home. There is nothing going on at home that is concerning, but as is typical for young teens, she is irritated by her parents. Providing students with a space to be kids is so important.
Because of the way our community is designed, students have very few places to meet to have fun. They can go to the mall where they get kicked out for loitering or being energetic kiddos. They can go to each other's houses when permitted. They often meet each other in outside locations. This provides them with a safe, indoor location to hang out and be themselves. Other staff comment on how much patience I must have to handle their chaos. The way I see it is that they deserve the chance to let loose and not hold back. They are loud, but they are being kids and so often, they aren't allowed to do that. It is a safe place to be a kid and that is why I give up two and half hours every week to support this.
The snacks are essential as students are with me for 2 or more hours before they ride the bus home. They are ravenous and trust that these snacks have very much been enjoyed. The students and I are grateful to you for making that happen.”
With gratitude,
Ms. Hamilton
