When asked the question "if you could choose to learn anything in music, what would it be," many of my students will give the answer "I want to learn the guitar!" Unfortunately, the size(s) of a guitar presents many challenges for elementary learners. Thankfully, there's an option very similar to the guitar that will give students the same learning opportunities: the ukulele! In a world where so many things are out of their control, learning an instrument of choice can boost a student's confidence and gives them an outlet from stress they are experiencing. Students need these benefits now more than ever. Music is the universal language and can be used to explore many different cultures. My students speak a variety of languages and come from a variety of different cultures. Ukulele small groups would present a unique opportunity for students to share their cultures and languages with each other. By doing this, the music room will continue to develop a culture of unity, acceptance, and open-mindedness that encourages students to be themselves and strive for excellence. It would also provide a greater sense of responsibility and accomplishment for students to carry with them both in and out of the music room.
