Over the years, I have learned that if a student struggles with writing, there is a great chance that they do not read proficiently. I believe that using mentor text is a great method of improving literacy because it combines reading and writing. One author defines Mentor Text as pieces of literature that the teachers can return to again and again as we help our young writers learn how to do what they may not yet be able to do on their own. Mentor Text help writers observe assorted styles of writing and well-written text they enjoy listening to. It is a shared experience between students and teachers. The mentor text process also provides an opportunity for students to engage in higher order thinking as they analyze the text. I believe that most students have life experiences that can influence excellent writers, but occasionally, they may lack the necessary skills to structure their writing. Mentor texts I am requesting will include brief mini-lessons on grammar, mechanics, dialogue, sentence structure, and the writer's craft. Students will see professional writing and model their writing after the authors. The process also helps them understand the connection between reading and writing. Mentor texts definite contribute to reading comprehension because we are questioning the authors ideas, style, and purpose for writing.
