About 90% of my students tell me that they have never dissected anything. About 70% of my students tell me that they wish to pursue a career in the medical field. With my degree in radiologic technology, I feel like I have an advantage when it comes to knowing what sort of classes these students will encounter on their journey to becoming healthcare professionals. If these students do not get the chance to dissect something while they are are in my class, chances are that the first thing they dissect will be in a college laboratory. If this project gets fully funded, the students will use the frog anatomy kits to introduce themselves to the nature of dissection. Once they master their dissection skills with the frogs, we will move on to the cat anatomy kits. Speaking from experience, cats offer a better representation of how the human body works. Cats are much bigger animals, i.e., their organs are bigger. Bigger organs allow the students to study the anatomy more closely than they will be able to with the frogs. I want my students to become familiar with these tools now so that when they reach the collegiate level, they already have an understanding of how things work.
