I am always looking for new activities where I can get ‘buy in’ from the students and give them their own space to shine. Adding a skateboarding program to the school would help build self esteem and confidence for a great many students underserved by the traditional curriculum. There is a skateboard park right behind our school. If a student can ride, they can go to that park. They don’t need to join a team or set a schedule, they can just show up and skate. This not only keeps them involved in my class, it keeps them involved in their local community with a healthy lifetime activity. It also gives the students who might not have had an opportunity to learn skateboarding, but have always wanted to, a safe place to learn and grow. With limited equipment, I ran a small pilot program with skateboarding last year to see how the students would take to it. The results were transformative. Some of my toughest kids, who I struggled to get to participate in the past, couldn’t wait to get on the boards. Many of them surprised themselves by becoming leaders and helping students who were struggling. This year I have partnered with VANS and Boards for Bros to teach my students how to build, maintain and ride a skateboard for one day in September. They will have generously donated enough boards for all of the students. The only thing my students are missing is safety gear. That's where I need your help.
