Books are a great way to help students connect with the world around them. The stories can introduce students to characters with similar struggles. With great stories, students see that they are not alone and that there are ways problems can be solved.
With these resources, we can increase topics discussed in school wide in classroom guidance groups, small groups, and book clubs.
For example, I just read, "The Scar," last week to a group of 2nd and 3rd graders who have all lost either a mother or father recently. The students were able to identify the boy's feelings of anger and anxiety right away. Then, they began sharing their own feelings and saying things like, "I felt that way too." We ended the group with students making their own story boards with "before" and "after" illustrations and words to describe how their lives have changed since the death of their parent(s).
Wouldn't it be great if we could have even more books accessible to not only one person but multiple support staff and teachers?
I researched online and found a great list of social/emotional books that cover a wide variety of crucial topics for our children. These books touch on the following: grief/loss, bullying, divorce, self-esteem, making good choices, and acceptance of others no matter the differences.
The total amount of money needed was determined after I went on Amazon and added each of these books to my cart.
Please join me in making our Elementary School an even better place for children to learn crucial life skills and receive early interventions to reduce the impact of traumas experienced.
