Writing is Thinking
Funded Oct 3, 2019Thank you so much for your donation. Your generosity made having interactive notebooks possible. My students have been working on New Word Dictionaries, Learning Logs, and writing in their notebooks.
The New Word Dictionaries are turned into beautiful, tactile flash cards. The creative flash cards were made out of the paper that was supplied to my classroom. The flash cards improved their performance on the vocabulary tests.
They have used the notes they take to create great body biographies on some of the beautiful paper you supplied. They are demonstrating their understanding of characters in the novels by using your materials. The students are producing higher quality work because they have the supplies to support them. The classroom is a brighter place because I can display their beautiful work on the walls. Thank you so much. We are using everything you gave us and we will continue doing so throughout the school year.”

Funded Oct 9, 2018I am thankful for your donation that allowed us to purchase The House on Mango Street for my students. It is the first book that I have read that is written by a Hispanic author. The students were very excited to see the book and started reading it immediately. This book will allow my students to experience the adventures of the characters within them that are also coming of age. I am excited to see how having a book that engages them will help increase their reading diagnostic scores. I have sincere gratitude for making my honors English class more enjoyable and engaging for young readers.”

Funded Aug 22, 2018I really appreciate the donation of tons of snacks for my students. I teach all freshmen students and it was very special to see their faces light up when they got a snack. They got them for starting high school and many occasions after that. I was able to provide plenty of snacks for them in preparation and during the PSAT test that we took as an entire school. The snacks helped my students move through the 3 hour test without being hungry. In addition, the Foss football team was using my classroom every day to review video. I was able to give them snacks before they had a tough night of practice or games. All of the students are so appreciative of the sustenance that helped them get through the day.”

Funded May 25, 2018My students and are using the whiteboards regularly during a classroom protocol called "consensus". The students write their own ideas on the outside squares and then come together to agree or have a consensus in the middle of the board. We are using this in my Honors English Language Arts classes and also in my Approaches to Learning IB Skills class. The students are using them to prepare for Collaborative Study groups in which they take a new topic and use the board to figure out their roles. The students with the least knowledge becomes a presenter and the most becomes the facilitator for the group. It's exciting to see that the white boards make their role selections so easy. I am impressed with the topics the students chose to cover during these activities. They will be discussing current topics such as immigration, pollution, and racial injustice using the supplies you gave us. Thank you again, you made a large contribution and a difference in our lives.”

Hearing is Thinking!
Funded Mar 27, 2018My students have been able to participate in several online learning experiences using the headphones that you purchased. They used NewsEla which is a platform that has several news articles for the students to read and annotate. They have a new app called SnapNRead that gives them access to have anything on the Internet read aloud to them. Statistics prove that when students who read receive audio support. I was able to prove this using a UPAR assessment. This assessment helped me gage if the audio was helping them. Some of the students were able to read at 12th grade reading level with audio. On their own without audio, they were reading at 5th grade levels. These students should be reading at least 9th grade. I am very happy that I had access to the headphones. The headphones gave access and most importantly educational confidence to these students. Thank you so much!”

Funded Sep 5, 2017I can't thank you enough for providing these beautiful green notebooks for my students. Your gift has helped me make a difference in the lives of these students in several ways. These young minds have improved their ability to write, read, collaborate, organize their ideas, think critically, and present information in front of a group. Thank you for supporting my efforts to make a difference with their literacy.
My 9th grade honors English class improved this semester because of you. The students came to me without the ability to write a sentence and because they had a place designated for them to write, they definitely improved. We write everyday at least a paragraph. The students then use their writing and thinking to speak to a peer. After they speak to a peer about their writing, they have to share out with the class. This process using the materials you purchased has improved their confidence speaking in front of the class.
We have seen tons of growth with our students ability to read based on a diagnostic test. this is attributed to the structure they have with writing everyday and having to think about what they read in the process. I have them write Cornell notes and this has helped them improve their ability to organize information that they can use later. They love having a place where they can write whatever they need to express their ideas and opinions. Thank you for providing this medium for them. Thank you!”

Academic Success Achieved
Funded Sep 27, 2017I can't thank you enough for providing these beautiful binders and dividers for my students. Your gift has helped me make a difference in the lives of these students in several ways. They were so excited to see that they had been gifted such a nice binder. They loved that the dividers were also there to teach them how to organize. The students will be able to use these binders and skills in the future, too. These young minds have improved their ability to organize their classwork, reflection, thoughts, and ideas. Thank you for supporting my efforts to make a difference with their literacy.
My 9th grade honors English class improved this semester because of you. Their ability to create a portfolio of their work this year has been successful. They have learned the importance of staying organized. They have been able to reflect on the work they have because it is so organized. It is very clear that their reflection skills have improved.
My students have been able to stay organized in other classes because of this investment. The kiddos have been able to better formulate their ideas in an organized manner because of the process they learned with staying organized.
Thank you, again, for supporting literacy!”
