  • Westside Story Is a Modern Retelling of Romeo and Juliet.

    Funded Dec 6, 2024

I am honors to accept your donation. The novelization of Westside Story is a more culturally responsive title to read in high school. I love that we will get to read a book that doesn't deal too closely with suicide as it is a sensitive topic with teenagers. Thank you for being so generous and blessing us with books that will continue to give over the year. I truly appreciate you and everything you do to support our youth and future leaders.”

  • Snacks for Scholars

    Funded Sep 18, 2024

Thank you so much for your wonderful generosity. Your willingness to help me has made my job easier. We ate the jolly ranchers as we attacked rigorous work. Sometimes on Mondays when we were tired, but still needed to work.

Some of the snacks have been used to help establish a peer-to-peer tutoring program. During lunch upperclassmen have come in to help 9th grade students improve their grades. Your snacks have fueled the tutors and students coming for help.

In addition to using for rigorous work, help with Monday sleepiness, and tutoring; I also use the snacks for rewards for winning prizes or outstanding behavior. Thank you so much for your support!”

  • Writing Is Thinking

    Funded Sep 18, 2024

Thank you so much for the writing materials. The students have loved having access to wonderful mechanical pencils for their writing. They write every day in the notebooks that were provided. They use the pencils, pencil sharpener, notebooks, and erasers daily. My favorite essay that they wrote was a "This I believe" essay. They chose something that they believe in and wrote about why they have this belief.

Learning about their beliefs with great resources made it so much easier to expect hand written essays. Not only do I feel more connected to my students due to the writing, but students are passing at higher rates and performing at higher levels in class. Thank you for your contributions and generosity.”

  • We Need Diverse Books for Literature Circles

    Funded May 29, 2023

Thank you so much for your generous contribution to our classroom. Your contribution made it possible to provide a wide range of books for students to use for literature circles and reading Wednesday. I teach another class called Popular Literature and we were able to use the books in that class as well. Thank you for your generosity. It helped me do my job with a little more ease. Students were more engaged when they had choices that they enjoyed. On reading Wednesday the class was silent because they were busy reading and flipping pages.

I had students tell me that the main character in one of the books reminds them of the fathers in their lives. They loved hearing the stories and seeing characters that looked like them. The other day I was in the hallway at school. A student walked up and said, "You're the reason I like reading now." That student wouldn't have that experience without your help.

Your contribution made a huge difference and changed lives.”

  • Back To School Transition Snacks.

    Funded Aug 29, 2023

Thank you so much for your generosity. Students are more engaged and learning effectively due to your contribution to our classroom. I really appreciate donors like you who open possibilities for our classroom.

The transition snacks helped students as they moved in to high school, a much larger place than they were used to. They had to navigate new lunch lines and new hallways. You made it possible for me to meet their needs and take pressure and anxiety off of their plates.

Most importantly, thank you for helping me take care of students. Maslow's hierarchy of needs says we need to take care of their basic needs so that they can learn effectively. That's exactly what you did.”

    With gratitude,

    Mrs. Glodowski

  • We Need Diverse Books

    Funded Nov 29, 2022

Thank you so much for your kindness and generosity. We are beginning our end of the year lit circles. Students have more choices because of you. They're so engaged and have enjoyed selecting their books. The high volume of high interest novel choices have been a huge hit with students. I look forward to what the remainder of the year will look like. The students will read these books independently and will work with a group. I know students will be more engaged because of you! Thank you for helping me prioritize literacy. Your purchase will also help build collaboration skills.”

  • Writing is Thinking

    Funded Dec 28, 2022

My students have been able to use the wonderful supplies you donated to write poetry, write argumentative essays about college, and now for close reading of texts. Thank you so much for your generosity. The writing supplies you provided helped students by removing a barrier they might usually have. They know we have nice writing materials so they can always have the opportunity to do their best writing work. Thank you for helping us provide the best workspace for our children who are the future of the city. Thank you for your help to create a literacy culture in my classroom.”

  • Did My Heart Love Till Now?

    Funded Sep 21, 2022

Thank you for your generosity! It used to be dificult to come up with the resources I need to improve student outcomes. With people like you, it is easy to improve student's interest in reading and therefore improved student literacy outcomes. You made a difference in so many lives when you donated to our classroom. We study Romeo and Juliet this year as ninth graders. We will also study West Side Story and If You Come Softly. This book, "A Pho Love Story", helps me show the impact Shakespeare has had on our culture and the world of literature. We read these high interest novels prior to Romeo and Juliet and it makes Romeo and Juliet so much more accessible. This gift is the gift that will keep on giving over the years. Thank you so much.”

  • Culturally Relevant Coming of Age Novels for My Students

    Funded Aug 10, 2022

Thank you so much for your help in curating wonderful, culturally responsive novels for my students. This donation has made a huge difference in the interest kids have to pick up a book. This improved collection has helped with improving literacy this year. It is the gift that will keep on giving. We have a "Reading Wednesday" protocol that helps students with gaining academic endurance in reading. They now how have more options in the classroom to choose from. We also read a book together with an audio book for fun. With your help, students are able to have quick and easy access to books that they enjoy reading. I love when they are surprised that they actually like a book. It keeps happening! Thank you for your generosity.”

  • Books Allow in More Light

    Funded Oct 22, 2021

Thank you so much for the donation of a class set of "My Almost Flawless Tokyo Dream Life". My students chose this book after reading several first chapters of books. Your purchase helped them see how the community can pull together to support them and their literacy. The students were so engaged with the book because they chose it.

They wrote about how the characters changed and developed while they learned about the culture in Japan. They completed projects about the character development. My students felt connected to the narrator of the book because she was assertive.

The author highlighted many themes such as : Foster care, drug abuse, the negative impacts of drug abuse, the impact of families. My students improved their speaking and listening skills as they participated in multiple Socratic Seminars about the book and the rich themes that exist within it. Thank you for your generosity. You changed my students lives and they will forever remember this novel.”

Writing is thinking. At our high school we are in a period of growth where we need to prepare more kiddos to perform at an accelerated level. These notebooks will give the students what they need to be successful writing daily. The journals will be used for an entire year and will be a great representation of their work as freshmen candidates. In addition to student growth, writing also helps me get to know my students because it gives them a platform to tell me anything. My students will be able to fill the pages of this composition notebook if they are given the opportunity with the activation of background knowledge and connections to texts. They will write about what they think, how they make connections to what they read, and how to connect their ideas to the world today.
