My students are English language learners and the majority come from low socio-economic. While I find that most of my students come in with some disadvantages, there are things they still have in common with other children: they are curious, inquisitive, they have a thirst for knowledge, they want a fair chance in our educational system. So how can I as a teacher, distract them from their sadness and offer them a peek at joy and opportunities to learn and grow? Unfortunately, with a yearly classroom budget of a few hundred dollars ($175 to be exact) I am unable to provide some things that are essential to their everyday learning at home.
