  • Empower Young Innovators & Creators with 3D Printing

    Funded Mar 15, 2023

On behalf of all of us at Camp Allen, I wanted to express our deepest gratitude for your generosity. Your gift has helped us provide our students with the opportunity to learn engineering hands-on, cultivate their creativity and curiosity, and create a love for learning and exploration within a community that is often marginalized within the STEM field.

With your support, our students now have access to the latest technology, which will help them develop the skills they need to succeed in the future. The 3D printer gives them a chance to put their imagination to work and turn their ideas into tangible objects that they can hold in their hands, which is a powerful experience for a learner. Given the enthusiasm I have seen from students as they tinker and design, I believe that this exposure to 3D printing may even inspire them to pursue a career in STEM, but even if they do not choose that career path, I know that experimenting with engineering will give them the confidence to take on challenges that may seem daunting at first, as 3D printing is certainly a test of patience, determination, and wit.”

  • More Inclusive Books for Engaged Readers

    Funded Oct 27, 2021

I am so appreciative of your support! Many of my students are reluctant readers and they do not connect with the typical books canonically taught in English classrooms, as they do not reflect their identities or lived experiences. Your donation has allowed me to provide literature that is truly reflective of my multifaceted classroom, filled with students from a wonderful array of cultural, ethnic, geographic, and socioeconomic backgrounds.

My students eyes lit up when they saw the books that lined our shelves, and they immediately rushed to check out all the new additions. The excited chatter about seeing our new books made my heart soar, and I had many students marvel at the quality and interest level of the books selected.

Thank you again, as your donation has helped provide me with the opportunity to truly create an inclusive and welcoming community in my classroom.”

  • Inclusive Books for Engaged Readers

    Funded Oct 21, 2021

Thank you so much for the donations! My students were thrilled to see the books that were on their lists appear in our classroom. It was an incredible sight to watch them walk in and immediately gravitate to our newly-stocked bookshelf and peer at the titles. The most precious of all was a (typically non-reading) student who asked me "Am I allowed to look at this?" when he saw a boy of The Batboy, a sports book that captured his attention as soon as he saw it. I had to laugh a little as I said "Please do!" and he grabbed it and began investigating it. My students were so excited to see these books that represent their lives and experiences, and I am grateful for your donations to support my mission of inclusive representation on my bookshelves.”

  • Help Keep Our Pencils Sharp, Hands Clean, & Bodies Safe

    Funded May 27, 2021

Thank you so much for helping to ensure that my students had access to needed supplies! Unfortunately, due to shipping/supply chain issues, I was unable to get the items originally requested. However, I did adjust my order to get a class set of the novel Shuri, which is an awesome, inclusive novel that centers on one of the main characters from Marvel's Black Panther, so the kids are super excited to dive into it when it fits with our curriculum! Thank you so much for your generosity and compassion! You are helping ensure our students are empowered with the kind of education that builds our future.”

  • A Book for Everyone: Diverse Voices for Our Class Library

    Funded Jul 14, 2020

Thank you so much for supporting my students. I am so grateful to be able to share diverse stories with my students, many of whom do not find themselves reflected in the stories traditionally read in schools.

We have had the opportunity to use some of the picture books as a whole class to study literary devices and techniques. We have also sharpened our inferring skills and summary skills while reading stories that really matter. My students have expressed interest and appreciation in the stories, remarking about the new knowledge they gained from some of the nonfiction books, while also discussing the exciting plots of the fictional stories we've read.

Thank you for helping me to provide meaningful and representative literature for my students. It matters.”

    Funded Aug 14, 2019

Thank you so much for your generosity! It has been so wonderful to have so many supplies to offer to my students, ensuring that they have everything they need to be successful in class. My students are so appreciative that they are able to come to me and get the supplies that they need without having any trouble, so that they're able to be fully prepared to learn. My students have enjoyed the new books added into our library because they're able to identify with the diverse protagonists in them. Thank you again for your donation!”

Hello, prospective donors, I'm a seventh-grade English teacher in Suffolk, Virginia. I fell in love with reading when I was young because it offered me a way to escape reality. As a teacher, my goal is to show my students the powerful portal that a good book can become; if they are sad or lonely or angry, they can read their way out of those negative emotions by living vicariously through the protagonist. Not only does reading offer students a way to temporarily hide from challenging circumstances, but it also teaches them the crux of humanity: empathy. In my mind, there is no better teacher of what it means to be human being than to live the lives of a hundred characters in a hundred different books. I am also a firm believer in the issue of social justice, and I seek to empower my students with the knowledge necessary to succeed in the future, regardless of their socioeconomic circumstances.
