Hook Young Readers and Mathematicians
Funded Jun 7, 2014Thank you so much for your help in purchasing 2 iPads for our classroom. The need for technology is never ending and you have provided the access my students need. They adore the iPads! When students finish their work early, it's a mad dash for extra iPad time. They love Sushi Monster and the game they call "Drive the Bus". I love that they're practicing essential skills in a way that they love.
We use the iPads each day during reading and math. During reading, students are logged into their personal book rooms on a site we use, and they are able to read and listen to books on their level. This is so crucial and provides them with strong examples of reading fluency. Additionally, they use the iPads for sight word games, spelling practice, and handwriting reinforcement. In our math block, students use the iPads to build fact fluency and number recognition skills, and to experiment and manipulate tangrams, place value blocks, and geoboard shapes.
The iPads have allowed my students to build a level of independence in our classroom. They get them out, clean them, and put them away on their own. It's the most desired classroom job! They have found more ways to use the apps that I would have imagined possible. They are truly exploring and delving into technology, and it's all thanks to you!”
With gratitude,
Mrs. Sterling

Funded Apr 23, 2013Thank you so much for your donation to our classroom so we could make major improvements to our listening center. With the new CD player, books, and CDs, we are able to listen to a wide variety of quality picture books. We use our listening center during our reading block as a student choice center, and also during our learning lab as a rotation. The kids have started to run the station themselves, which is another great perk. They're becoming more and more independent every day!
This project has boosted my teaching because after reading a book as a class, many students can listen to the book again in our listening center. They can review the story structure as well as improve their listening comprehension. Additionally, students can listen to new stories in a group and then retell and reread the story after hearing it.
The students thoroughly enjoy our listening center. They get excited when I'm able to add a new book to the center. I hope you enjoy the pictures of them listening and reading together. Their learning is taking off!”
With gratitude,
Mrs. Sterling
Listening For Literacy
Funded Aug 18, 2012Thank you so much for your amazing donation to my classroom. The listening center and headphones are a true hit! During reading, the students are able to enjoy different books being read aloud to them while tracking the words and following along with the story. It is definitely one of the most popular choices during reading time.
Most classrooms are not able to have their own listening centers, but with your donation, they now have access to one each and every day. For beginning readers, listening to reading is just as important as phonics, comprehension, and decoding.
Thank you again!”

Extra, Extra! Read All About it! Scholastic News
Funded May 1, 2012Thank you so much for the Scholastic News subscriptions! We love getting different editions each month. The timely topics covered allow us to study additional material, like Fire Safety week and school long ago, and also to go more in depth with material we're already discussing, like Columbus and the Pilgrims. We can't wait to see what we get in the coming months!
Your donation has given the children access to nonfiction text that they usually are not able to experience because Scholastic News is written right on their level. We identify and use labels, captions, and headings in our news editions. We answer multiple choice questions and create graphs about the information we read. The opportunities for learning really are endless, and it's all thanks to you!
We cannot say, "THANK YOU!" enough!”
With gratitude,
Mrs. Sterling
