Students in my social studies class research and report on current events regularly. What better way to nurture a student's desire to learn about the world that they are a part of than to create a middle school newspaper. It is very important to me as a social studies teacher to make sure that my students have a voice about what is going on around them. I stress to my students that they are old enough to have and express their own opinions. All students should be able to engage in intelligent conversations and express their views. Students will create a middle school newspaper for their peers that will highlight student achievments inside and outside of school, including art work, poetry, photographs, and short stories. The newspapers will also include any school news and announcements for the month, as well as reporting on actual current events that are happening in the world today. Students will also have an opportunity to connect with the community and report on anything that is going on within the neighborhood. I will act as an advisor for the project, however, this will be a student run newspaper. Students will create and edit the stories on the laptop computer. They will design the style of the newspaper and artwork as well. They will be responsible for photographing students that are being featured as well as any events that are taking place. They will learn to use the digital camera to download and print their photographs. The newspaper will be printed in color so having a color printer is absolutely essential to the project. Having the students create this newspaper will instill in them a sense of ownership and pride in their work.
