These manipulatives and games will help my kinesthetic and visual learners thrive. Even the most resistant of students will be more engaged using these important tools that reinforce mathematics concepts. I teach Math Foundations at a School for students with Autism, and it's important for my students to build their confidence in their skillset -- it's there we just have to help them discover it! The students need calculators to help them with some of the lower level concepts they haven't grasped and need extra support on when they are doing grade level math. For example, if a student struggles with basic math, they will have a hard time with computing area or perimeter without a calculator, even if they understand the formulas. What's more, I want to create an environment in my classroom where we develop our math brains, which is why I requested math posters with basic math as well. All of the math games match my student's IEP goals: Money, fractions, time, word problems. We will be having "game days" where I will be tracking progress on their IEP goals by forming small game groups, grouped by ability and IEP goals and led by myself or the paraprofessional. Many of my students see math work and automatically exhibit signs of anxiety, my hope is through a combination of games and manipulatives I can get more accurate data. The manipulatives are also so important when re-teaching some of the basic math.I know these games and manipulatives will help my students learn and I cannot wait to watch them connect math with learning and fun, and give them a chance to change some of the negative feelings they have had toward math in the past! I look forward to using these in my classroom!
