I am a teacher of gifted in Plant City, Florida and have the challenge to build a gifted program at a Title I elementary school during many budget cuts. My school has a population of 98% eligible for free/reduced lunch status and a high percentage of English Language Learner and minority students. Our school district, Hillsborough County, is the eighth largest school district in the country. Many of our students walk to school and get there early for free breakfast which is something our district has for all students regardless of income. For some students who get to school late, may be one less meal they are eating that day thus affecting their mood and learning that day. The parents of many of our students work minimum wage jobs and do not speak English, but yet are very eager and show up to school for family night events and want to support their child and education in any way they can.
