In today’s’ technology-driven world, it is important to prepare our students for the future. The need for critical thinking skills in a high-tech workforce is becoming increasingly important. The current shortage of skilled workers in STEM fields is disturbing, but the lack of FEMALE workers in those fields is downright alarming. Women currently make up less than 25% of the STEM field workforce and many believe that that gap is broadening. Teaching robotics to young women increases their ability to be innovative thinkers and productive members of an increasingly digital society. By teaching our young ladies the basics of robotics, we can open to them a whole new world of exciting opportunities that they wouldn’t have access to otherwise. I am requesting a classroom set of Ozobots to use in teaching our GEMS (Girls in Engineering Math and Science) Club members the basics of coding and robotics. GEMS provides girls in 3rd-5th grades who have shown an interest in STEM education with mentors and resources for pursuing their dreams. Girls in high school volunteer their time to help mentor these young budding scientists and encourage them in their endeavors. The Ozobots will be used in our after-school club meetings for coding and design challenges.
