The Plot Thickens: My Students Need 2 Graphing Calculators
Funded May 6, 2019Thanks to your donations, I will have enough classroom calculators to share with my ninth graders next year! Due to the high cost of these calculators, this wouldn't have been possible without your help.
In the past, I have skipped over a chapter in our book that required graphic calculators, even though it was one of my favorite lessons to teach. Now that I have enough calculators for my class, I will be able to teach that chapter. I am so excited! As our students progress through 10th, 11th and 12th grades, they will be asked to use graphing calculators more regularly. I am so grateful for the opportunity to provide them with some experience in the 9th grade classroom.”
With gratitude,

I See You Have a Graphing Calculator. Plotting Something?
Funded Aug 20, 2017As a teacher, I try to improve my teaching every year and reflect on what went well the previous year and what I could do better not only for myself but for my students. This is the first year that the school's schedule allowed me to see my Freshman students every day of the school week, which has had a major impact on the material that I am able to teach them through this year so far. In the past, I have only been able to teacher chapters 1-4 during semester one and then have to fit chapters 5-9 in semester two. With the change in the schedule, we have now been able to get through chapters 1-5 during semester one. This might now seem like a huge difference, however it really does. What this has allowed to happen is now we can spend more time on the chapters 6-9, which are true algebra topics that are complete new to freshman. One chapter in particular, chapter 6 Solving Systems of Equations, has always been one of my favorite to teacher. Even though it was one of my favorites we didn't have time to learn all the methods of solving systems because we didn't have time, and that one lesson would be to solve systems of equations by using graphing calculators. Most of my students have not been able to afford graphing calculators, nor was I, and because of this, that lesson was always skipped. It made me sad that we had to skip it and that my students were never able to learn this, while students at other schools were learning this. However this will now change because of YOU!!! My students will now be able to learn about this and even though they might now realize it in the now, it is going to help them in the future. So they might not be able to thank you years down the road, but I can thank you for them now! So I really do appreciate it on their behalf.”
With gratitude,
Ms. Geiger
