In my classroom, I have a tile floor with no carpet where the students gather when I teach. At our school, first-grade students spend almost half of their classroom time on the floor in front of the teacher learning new information and discussing it with their classmates. The carpet is the central location for instruction and collaboration in our classrooms. After they finish their daily morning work, they "come to the carpet" to learn about literacy and science. After lunch, they "come to the carpet" for instructional math time. Again after P.E. or Music, they "come to the carpet" for their phonics lesson. The carpet is where students know they will learn something new, get to talk to their friends about what they learned, and ask me questions that sparked from the lesson. With this requested navy blue rectangular carpet my students will have a designated place to collectively learn every day with their peers.
