Students love to be able to engage with science with visuals, hands-on actvities, and real life examples of the science we talk about every day! I see many students stay engaged or even beable to reset when they are upset by examining items and materials throughout the class. It also teaches students a key part of science: observing what they are seeing and asking questions about it to increase curiousity- something many of the greatest scientists in history have done.
