I work in a high poverty neighborhood, where the high school graduation rate is less than 50%. 20 of my 24 students are second language learners. Most of them did not speak any English in September, but they've come a long way since then. They love listening to stories and I reread their favorite ones everyday! They feel very proud of themselves when they are able to read books all by themselves.
