Once a week my students beam with excitement as they visit the computer lab. This is the day that they look forward to most. They love to practice typing on the keyboard, swirling their mouse around, and navigating their internet browsers. I wish my students had the opportunity to be excited for computers every day. Many students in my classroom come from high-poverty with approximately 85% of students in the school receiving free or reduced lunch services. It is my goal to provide every one of my students with quality instruction that will help to close the achievement gap. Many of the students in my classroom don't have access to books or technology at home. We go to the computer lab once a week at school, but that's not enough to help my students to become more computer literate. I want my students to have the opportunity to interact with state-of-the art technology on a daily basis so that we can take reading, writing, and math to the next level. With technology being such a valuable tool in our society, it is essential that my students have the opportunity to meaningfully engage with computers in the classroom. It is important that my students have access to Chromebooks to help them to gain computer literacy skills. A set of 5 Chromebooks will allow my second grade students frequent access to state-of-the-art technology for researching, reading, math skills and more. These skills will not only prepare them for third grade , but will also help to prepare them for college and career readiness. I also envision these Chromebooks as a resource for improving my students reading, math and writing proficiency. Students will have the opportunity to access a number of educational applications and websites to support their learning.
