This year I started my school’s first service organization aimed at addressing issues that affect the LGBTQ student youth population. From gender identity to discrimination, the CCAGSA (Cabarrus Charter Academy Gay-Straight Alliance) has taken a front-row seat in promoting awareness about the many issues that affect this unique group of students on a daily basis. To learn more about these issues and promote awareness, this courageous group of young people will create informational flyers on topics that affect the LGBTQ community on a daily basis. This awareness project will consist of 4 major parts (steps). These parts will include: PART1 & 2: SELECTING & RESEARCHING TOPICS Students will be placed in small groups of between 3-5 students. Each group will pick a topic of their choice. Students will then be instructed to select a topic/issue that affects the LGBTQ community on a daily basis (i.e. discrimination, suicide, family rejection, etc.).The students will then be instructed to find relevant and recent information on the topic of their choice. PART 3: THE CREATION OF THE FLYERS (PRESENTATIONS) After the groups have selected their topics, the students will create PowerPoint or flyer presentations that discuss their topic. Their presentations will address the following questions: • What is the significance of their selected topic on the LGBTQ community? • Why they are passionate about their selected topic? • What aspects of their topic (issue) do they think is most important for people to understand? • What are the ways that other students make people in their own communities more aware of their topic and its significance on members of the LGBTQ community? PART 4: DISTRIBUTION OF THE FLYERS (THE FINAL STEP) Lastly, students will distribute their flyers to the student body during school events and extracurricular activities.
