I am striving to make the art room into a working studio, where supplies are readily available and students can choose which ones they want to use. With hands on guidance, teaching techniques, support and encouragement, my students will be able to explore drawing, painting, collage, sculpture, fibers, and much more. With better organization, that will come with the 10 drawer carts, students will be better able to see what is available to them and not be overwhelmed with clutter.
The items I'm requesting will allow students to have better access to paint, different drawing tools and techniques, a variety of collage supplies, along with some sculpture supplies. The light box will be a huge help for students who want to trace their early drawings onto a clean sheet of paper. We have been using the high windows, while standing on a chair in the past. More light boxes will be added in the future. I'm also requesting large foam blocks for Kindergarten. These will enable Kinders to develop better hand-eye coordination and introduce them to the wonderful world of sculpture.
With exploration of supplies, techniques, and projects students are interested in (instead of teacher lead projects), student involvement and engagement will greatly increase. When students work on what interests them, they can feel a sense of pride in what they create. This translates into more of a feeling of self worth and discovery. The arts can be very therapeutic and can truly save lives. I know it has saved my life and made me a better person. I hope to pass this on to my amazing students and help them gain the self confidence many so devastatingly lack.
