  • Every Student Deserves a Voice

    Funded Nov 10, 2021

I am so excited to share with you on how your generous donation has positively impacted my students! Since receiving the thermal laminator, pouches, and rings, I have created sets of communication boards and sentence starter picture icon strips for each of my teachers to use with their students. Just recently, one of my teachers told me that by using the various laminated sentence starter strips such as "I see the..." or "It is a..." her students' expressive language skills are improving! The students are saying more words and longer sentences now.

During my Speech therapy sessions, I have also seen so much growth in my students' communication skills because of your generosity. With the laminated communication boards, my students with limited communication skills can initiate a topic or respond to a question by pointing to a picture. I was so excited the first time one of my students who has low verbal skills, looked at the board, pointed to the picture icon "things", and said, "Fan." I asked him if he liked fans and he said "Si" (yes in Spanish). I then modeled a short phrase on the board "I like fan" which he imitated through verbalizing and pointing.

The possibilities are endless thanks to your donation! A colleague shared three wonderful picture communication boards that can help low verbal students say how they are feeling or what hurts to the school nurse by pointing to pictures. I was able to laminate two sets of them and put them on rings to offer to the nurses at my schools. They will have durable laminated boards to use with students. Our students will be able to successfully communicate their health needs.

Thank you for helping my students communicate effectively across their learning environments!”

    With gratitude,

    Mrs. Burch

  • Creating Colorful Curriculum Stories for Better Speech and Language

    Funded Aug 16, 2018

I am so very grateful for your generous donation to all of my students! With the colored printer and ink, I am now able to create vibrant Speech activities to help my students with increasing their production of sounds, use of language, and communication skills.

My students, who are working on improving their sounds such as the /r/ or /s/ sounds, now have bright and colorful worksheets to practice with me as well as with their families for homework. When they first saw the worksheets, they were so excited! We are also now able to make colorful pictures of things that contain the sound that they are working on with the printer. It is so wonderful to be able to customize my students' worksheets to their individual needs.

For my students with Autism, intellectual disabilities, and specific learning disabilities, I am now able to collaborate even more with the classroom teachers by printing their curriculum stories to use during their speech therapy time. With the colorful stories, they are able to progress towards achieving their speech goals while using the same curriculum activities from their classrooms.

Many of my students are low or non-verbal with limited communication skills. Because of your extreme generosity, I am now able to create colorful communication pictures and boards for them so that they may communicate better to their teachers, friends, and families. My goal as a speech

therapist is to help my students become better communicators. Thank you for helping me progress towards achieving my goal!”

    With gratitude,

    Mrs. Burch

All of my students are working to improve their speech, language, and/or communication skills. My students who are in Special Day Classroom Programs are using a wonderful curriculum that has stories and activities that are highly picture-based. With a color printer, my students will be able to increase their language and communication skills while reviewing brightly colored curriculum-based stories. Some of them will also be able to learn how to communicate using colored picture communication boards or books that I can create with the printer. My students who have articulation, voice, or stuttering difficulties will also benefit from having bright and colorful picture scenes or flash cards to practice. Colorful speech homework activities may just be what my students need to motivate them more to succeed!
