  • World Map Needed Because Geography Matters

    Funded Feb 9, 2023

What a difference a world map makes! Thank you so very much for supporting this important grant! How is a teacher supposed to teach Global history without a map? I remember years ago when there had a been a terrorist attack in Paris. In discussing the issues I remember a student stating that she was more empathetic to their suffering because she knew where Paris was on the map. She had more of a human connection because of her geographic knowledge. My students have been thrilled to pull the map down and "map out" the history that we are learning as we do the spread of the Industrial Revolution and Imperialism. Thank you so very much for this important grant!”

  • The Law Club, Because We Love the Law!

    Funded Dec 17, 2022

Thank you so much for supporting our Law Club. We are off to a great start! The kids are so appreciative of their pocket Constitutions, folders, and organizing binders. We are learning about topics that the kiddos want to explore that we do not have time to do during our day schedule. Currently, we are making PSA posters on recognizing signs of abuse and where to get help as well as careers in child protective services. We are so very grateful for the supplies. The kiddos come into the classroom, grab their folders and we get to business. So very grateful for making it all possible in pink!!”

  • The 1619 Project: Banning Books Is Bad

    Funded Jan 25, 2023

Thank you all so very much for the gift of this hard-copy class set of "The 1619 Project: A New Origin Story," by Nikole Hannah-Jones. Like last year, the first year we read the book, the students had immediate reactions, connections, and historical understandings. We read the chapter," Sugar" in connection with our unit on the Haitian Revolution, the New York Timese investigative report entitled, "The Ransom." The students got so much out of their reading. The chapter connects the historical importance of the profits from sugar plantations in the formation of the United States with the current negative health impacts that the commodity has on the American population. My students are given the language and the understanding of why many of them live in food deserts where healthy food is hard to come by but sugary products are cheap and abundant. We are so grateful for the hardcover copies as they will allow my classes to use them for years to come. Thank you so very much for this important banned book.”

  • Photographing Our Own Story In an Instant!

    Funded Jan 25, 2023

Thank you so very much for this wonderfully fun mini-grant! It is a hit! The kids have so much fun with it - we are still in the process of creating our classroom mural(ish). While doing group work, students enjoy capturing their moments of work and it really adds some fun into all group processes. We will be bringing them on our trip to the New York Public Library and use while creating our World War I posters. Thank you so much - sometimes socio-emotional support comes with the littlest objects that help build community and self-esteem.”

  • Flashcards for Studying on the Subway, Buses, and at Home

    Funded Dec 15, 2022

Thank you so very much for supporting this mini-grant. Creating the flash cards provides a myriad of opportunities for students to 1) organize their thoughts; 2) prioritize knowledge; 3) autonomy of study; and 4) a practical study method that works for our commuting kiddos.

The kids are creating and using their flash cards in preparation for their assessments coming up, specifically AP World History and Honors Global History. The students were thrilled to choose their ring colors and decorate their decks. We are so very grateful to you all for believing in our futures enough to support us now”

  • "Paradise" by Abdulrazak Gurnah Because Beautiful Literature Informs

    Funded Sep 29, 2022

Thank you so very much for supporting this grant. We have just completed projects of historical fiction and how they illuminate our understanding of peoples and places with empathy and humanity. We read two books that focused on South Africa and Nigeria - this book brings us to the Horn of Africa. We are already cheering for Yusef as we grapple with the poverty of his home and the colonial structure of his city. Students are learning about a the loved experience of someone there age that will help them better understand current geo-politcal realities. Thank you so very much for supporting our children.”

  • Learning is Better in Color - Printer Needed

    Funded Nov 29, 2022

Goodness gracious what a difference the color printer makes! History and life come alive in color. For some reason, all of the printers in our school are always broken and are all black and white! We are now able to do a good chunk of our work in-house or at least print out the first one and replicate using the assistant principal's printer. We are so grateful to you for alleviating a lot of stress around where, when, and how, to make the copies we need. We are so grateful to you for supporting our kiddos.”

  • Meditation/Restoration Corner and Classroom Beautification

    Funded Oct 26, 2022

Thank you so very much for our lovely meditation corner. The area is beautiful, calming, and created by students. What you are not seeing, are the students (there is a specific group) that go and sit on the chair and cuddle a stuffed animal that I placed on it. The area has become a place of refuge for some overwhelmed kiddos. We are so grateful as the kids never thought someone would fund a grant that they created. All of the students are proud of the way it looks in the classroom. All students appreciate the intention of the meditation corner but some really need the brain break during lunch or periods when there are no classes in the room. Thank you for helping us create this space.”

  • Classroom Basics Needed for a Successful Year

    Funded Oct 26, 2022

Your donation arrived just in time and allowed me to provide new students with binders and replace some binders that had fallen apart. We are so grateful to you for supporting our classroom. There are a thousand little things that make a classroom a well-functioning space. In the absence of these necessities, the wheels start to slow down and sometimes they come off.

Donations from this DonorsChoose village have allowed us to thrive in the face of severe DOE budget cuts. We have basically been on our own monetarily and your support has allowed my classroom to function and our students to continue learning even if they are not given the basics by an indifferent city. We are so grateful to you! Thank you so very much.”

  • Classroom Basics - Toner and Paper Needed

    Funded Oct 26, 2022

Thank you so very much for supporting this mini-grant. Running around trying to find a printer is honestly a ridiculous waste of time and I am so grateful I do not need to that anymore. Most importantly, the students are able to print their work from my printer so it doesn't remain trapped in the "cloud." We are so very grateful to you for the support and thoughtfulness. Since receiving the toner, student work more organized and submitted on time (for some). I am able to spend my time planning and grading and not pulling my hair out. It is truly the little things that make a difference.”
