  • Student Empowerment & The Power of Cleanliness

    Funded Aug 12, 2024

We cannot thank you enough for supporting this mini-grant. This morning, my first-period class used the wipes to clean all of the desks, and the broom was used to get the dust-up. Most importantly, we are so very grateful for the air filter that helps keep the air clean in a space with no windows. Because of the kindness and generosity of DonorsChoose donors, we are able to learn in a beautiful environment that is clean and respectful of the student's learning.

Now more than ever students need to feel nurtured and protected within their space. We recently had brush fires in Brooklyn and students are feeling the weight of a lot. Students enter this classroom every day and appreciate the time, attention, and care that created it.”

    With gratitude,

    Ms. Christine Fryer

  • Organization Is Everything Part 12!

    Funded Jun 20, 2024

Once again, the proof is in the pudding. Over a month after school has started and this mini-grant is worth it's weight in gold. All students had their first report card (progress report) and the binders were integral to this first grade.

Students are organize and appreciating the volume of work required for success in this Global Regents class. It had impressed me year after year how important this mini-grant is for successful completion of the course. The pocket protectors organize their homework assignment sheet, vocabulary sheets, maps, and graphic organizers. The pocket dividers in the back organize the Harvard outlines. Most importantly, students take PRIDE and OWNERSHIP of their work-product.

We are so very grateful to the DonorsChoose community and to all of you have supported us throughout the years.”

  • Snacks Power Education

    Funded Feb 15, 2024

Thank you so very much for the snacks! Of course, they did not last long, but the feeling of being cared for remains long after the belly is full. As stated, many of our students experience food insecurity and others simply find the cafeteria completely overwhelming. I was so very grateful to be able to provide the kiddos with snacks.

Every culture makes community around food. Sharing snacks and stories during lunchtime has strengthened our relationships and helped students build stronger bonds with each other. Conversations around food lead to conversations about a myriad of other topics. We are so very grateful to you for the support and kindness.”

  • Cursive is Beautiful, Historical, and Healthy

    Funded Dec 15, 2023

The beauty of cursive and the meditative impact of it will never cease to amaze me. Students instantly find themselves focused on the work pages in deep concentration as they try and form the script of our founding documents. I have never had a student who did not enjoy the process of script or the world that opened up to them being able to now read it. Furthermore, for students who may struggle academically, this is an excellent project that strengthens neuroplasticity and supports differentiated learning styles. I would like to thank you because it also matters that each kiddo received their own book. We are so grateful for this resource, opportunity, and beautiful learning.”

  • Snacks, Soups, Tea, Cough Drops, Tissues, and Some Comfort

    Funded Jan 10, 2024

Thank you so very much for your thoughtful generosity and care. I cannot tell you how excited the kids were when they saw the ramen noodles. Needless to say, they did not last long. We always have students who are food insecure and students who simply will not go down to the cafeteria because it is an overwhelming place. Your generosity allowed me to provide for them in the sanctuary of the classroom.

Now let's discuss the tea kettle, tea, and cups! These kiddos feel like the Queen of England picking their own tea and drinking from the pretty periwinkle cups. My friend who is a principal told me how much her students enjoyed "tea time" and she was absolutely correct! Thank you so very much for your thoughtfulness and kindness - it is truly appreciated.”

  • Laminator and Laminator Pockets Support Primary Source Analysis

    Funded Sep 20, 2023

Thank you so very much for supporting our class with this invaluable resource. Laminating images, assignment cards, task cards, and student work saves so much time going forward. While I do make a significant amount of copies so that students have their own, I always use a laminator for task cards and images that are used over and over again regardless of the historical unit.

We are able to analyze primary sources throughout the day and simply wipe them down. We the laminator for our Socratic Seminar discussion moves. Thank you so very much for this practical and necessary classroom essential.”

  • Journaling and Annotating is Fun

    Funded Dec 14, 2023

Thank you so very much for the beautiful journals! They have been a total HIT! I have sensed the need for students to have the space and the means to simply write. Write so that they learn their own voice, write so that they can express themselves, and write because it is still a skill (thankfully) that they must have. Kids are walking into the room and going straight for their "journal box," and writing without complaint. Thank you for moving past the typo in the title (cringe) and supporting this lovely grant. The kiddos have a lot to say!”

    With gratitude,

    Ms. Christine Fryer

  • AP World History Succes, Now More Than Ever!

    Funded Oct 11, 2023

Thank you so very much for this wonderful resource! I am already seeing the benefits in my students. While many students are intimidated by the textbook, this is an efficient review at the end of unit. Students are using this resource to create study cards for the subway ride and home of course.

I find the practice tests with answers invaluable as well. We are so grateful to have this book now as we enter, "crunch time." As always, we are so grateful for your kindness in supporting our kiddos. Now, more than ever, it takes a village and the village is desperately needed. Happy New Year to you and yours.”

  • Covering: The Hidden Assault On Our Civil Rights

    Funded Aug 2, 2023

Thank you so very much for supporting this mini-grant. Sadly, by the time the book was ordered, Amazon was out of stock. We replaced the book with "How to be an AntiRacist," by Ibram X. Kendi. We decided on that book as we will be reading it in our Law class, Law and Advocacy. We started reading the book two weeks ago to pair it with our food justice unit. While the two might not seem readily connected, the food justice movement is about ending all systems of oppression. Sadly, food deserts and food apartheid are perfectly intertwined with racism. Students are challenged by the book and are learning a lot that will help them to better understand the world they live and to ideally unpack and challenge their own biases.

Thank you all so very much for your continued support.”

  • The History of the Environmental Conservation Movement & Current Realities

    Funded May 10, 2023

First, I would like to apologize for the delay. The fall has been particularly hectic and we could not finally complete the Socratic Seminar for "Silent Spring," until this week. The students learned an incredible amount about the use, abuse, and political corruption involved in using chemicals. Students had no idea of the pervasiveness and ubiquitousness of chemicals in our environment.

Students conducted a Socratic Seminar using and discussing questions that they created and researched. Students not only read "Silent Spring," but related the text to their modern reality of smokey skies from Canadian fires, higher rates of asthma from environmental racism in the South Bronx, living in food deserts, and more. We are so very grateful for the opportunity to read this beautifully written book that spearheaded the modern environmental movement.”
