You never know when you'll need to crash land a plane and survive in the wilderness. That's why I hope to supply my students with a class set of the novel "Hatchet." When the worst-case scenario strikes, you must rely on your preparation and background knowledge to give you the edge. As all seems lost, Brian Robeson must use what he's read in books and seen on TV to help him survive in the unforgiving landscape. Robeson learns from his mistakes, shows perseverance, engineers solutions to problems, and practices patient in order to gain the skills to fend off Mother Nature's fury. These are the themes I will guide my students to reflect upon while reading as work to survive the 5th grade and beyond. Other activities I plan to incorporate to bring life to the text: - Use a flight simulator to allow students to crash land a plane - Read information texts about non-fiction survival stories - Plan a field trip to the Spring Mountain wilderness area As an avid outdoor enthusiast who has spent months camping in the woods while hiking (and comfortably) surviving the Pacific Crest Trail. I hope this novel will help me share my love for both reading and the outdoors with my students.
