Hands on learning in math is important, especially for young children. Because of this, I try to incorporate manipulatives into each and every math lesson. This helps my students learn math concepts quicker. This is even more important in our classroom, because they are learning math in a new language. The Corona Virus has added many challenges to education. Having the kids use manipulatives while still being safe, is one of the ways the virus will be impacting classrooms in the upcoming year. In order for my students to use manipulatives in a safe way, I would like to make each of them their own math manipulative kit to use while they are in the classroom. This will cut down on the transfer of any germs as each student will use only their manipulatives, while still ensuring they have hands on learning opportunities every day. Each kit will consist of age appropriate materials which can be cleaned often and that allow children a hands on way to interact with the lesson. Manipulatives such as ten frames, learning mats, and money are important, versatile tools for young mathematicians. The ten frames I have chosen for these kits also bring in a small piece of German culture to my immersion math classroom. They look similar in color, blue and red, to many of the math manipulatives I have found on German teacher supply websites. It is important to me that these small cultural pieces are brought into our classroom to enhance and further cultural learning.
