Many of us fell in love with reading by having stories read to us. On the lap of a grandparent, librarian, or in my case a record player, we enthusiastically followed along with the narration. We didn't realize we were gaining critical reading skills along the way. A listening center in the classroom would enhance those reading skills at a point in their education that is critical to creating life-long readers. Some of the many benefits of audiobooks include: -"Stretching" students reading choices above their reading level. -Provide a model of fluent reading including punctuation, inflection, pacing, dialects, and humor. -Introduce new genres and topics. -Introduce new vocabulary. -Teach critical listening. -Foster pure enjoyment in the magic of storytelling. I will be using audiobooks in conjunction with print copies of books. This will allow students to follow the words on the page while they listen to the words being read. In anticipation of creating a listening center I have started a collection of appropriate titles. Our public library also has a good collection of audio books from which to borrow. Children would have access to the listening center on a daily basis. From avid readers to those just discovering the joy of a good book, a listening center would provide significant daily instruction in our third grade classroom!
