Compare and Contrast Read Aloud Day!
Funded Oct 25, 2018Compare and Contrast Read Aloud Day was a tremendous success, thanks largely to your donation! We had around 10 parents show up to participate in a workshop to learn how they can support their children in reading at home! Parents were thrilled to be able to receive raffle prizes before being sent off to their child's class to read aloud with them! Our kiddos loved not only have their family members read to them, but loved that they then had the opportunity to craft and compare throughout the rest of their day! Decked out in their PJs students had a comfy cozy day enjoying the best of life...books, family, crafts, cookies, movies and friendship!”

Funded Aug 22, 2018Once again, THANK YOU THANK YOU THANK YOU! It was such a pleasure being able to start our year off with a printer full of ink! Right away we made good use of it, using it to print pictures of ourselves being respectful, peaceful, responsible, safe, problem-solvers throughout our classroom and the school! With these pictures (and the accompanied writing) hanging in the halls, teachers and students alike were able to see what it looks like to show off the traits of a leader throughout the school environment!
Since then we've used our printer (stocked full of ink) to post pictures around the room to remind ourselves of the high expectations we set for ourselves as leaders each and everyday!
Thank you so much for your commitment to our little leaders!”

Funded Jun 26, 2018Thank you once again for your generous contributions! In the two short months that we've been in school so far it has been such a blessing to have all of these resources!
Right from the start we were able to use our Scholastic News to learn about classroom and larger communities! Students were able to explore articles and videos to teach them about urban, suburban and rural communities, and what it looks like for kids their ages to live in each of those areas!
They've LOVED the books on their levels, and have experienced such confidence in reading them! We are so grateful for your continuous support!”

End of Year Engagement!
Funded May 2, 2018Thank you so much for your support for this end of the year project! Many of these materials had been specifically requested by my students and they were BEGGING for them on a daily basis! After I announced the project to the students and showed them the Donors Choose page, they were asking every morning if the project had been funded yet and they were ELATED when the materials arrived! They dove into them right away, finding enjoyment in reading and math activities through the end of the school year!
Thank you so much for coming together to continue to support my students through the end of this school year, providing them with that extra little push as we continued to preparing for third grade, high school, and college!”

Bringing Super Heroes to Life!
Funded Feb 16, 2018Thank you so much for gifting our students with Black Panther books! All of them had known about or had seen the movie, and loved talking about it! One student even often pretends that he is from Wakanda! They were so excited to each receive a copy of the book to take home and continue reading about their new favorite super hero! I've loved being able to see each student interact and be inspired by the text! I was recently incredibly excited to see one of our English Language Learners writing about the Black Panther and why he thought he was the best!
Thank you for helping each one of our kids grow as readers and as leaders!”

The Journey of Some Cool Smart Storytellers
Funded Jan 18, 2018Thank you so much for your support of this project! Last week we had the pleasure of a visit from the author of the Journey of the Cool Smart Kid himself, Nahjee Grant. Mr. Grant read his book to the class, shared about his personal experiences throughout the book, and then signed students' copies of the book! They loved that he personally addressed each of their books with their names and a message. They felt so privileged to receive his autograph! Students have loved having their own copies of the book and often spend their independent reading time reading it! One student's parent even took the initiative to email the author and share how excited she was to receive the book!
Thank you again for making this experience possible for my students and helping them take the next steps towards becoming cool smart storytellers!”

Storytelling Through Art and Literacy
Funded Dec 18, 2017Thank you so much for our books about Gordon Parks and our disposable cameras! Our students had so much fun learning about Gordon Parks and using their cameras! As we read and discussed the book with a photography student from a local college, they took note of the fact that Parks photographed segregation, and showed it to the world. They each then got their disposable cameras to take pictures of themselves and their classmates to share their stories with others! Most of our students had never used a disposable cameras and were a riot to watch as they attempted to use their cameras for the first time! After some quick lessons we let our students loose as to take pictures of themselves, their friends, their favorite places in the room, and even the occasional selfie!
We're so grateful for your support, and these opportunities for our students!”

Empowerment Through Art!
Funded Aug 31, 2017Thank you so much for all our of materials! Whether its the books, the art supplies or our therapeutic resources, our students have enjoyed them all immensely! They have been so powerful in teaching us about our emotions, and how we can communicate them in ways that benefit ourselves and our communities!
It has been such a pleasure to have brand new art supplies that work well for our students to be able to create with! So far we have created murals celebrating the positive impacts that we can have on our community, the way that sadness and happiness work themselves out in our lives, and demonstrating how kindness helps us soar!
We look forward to continue to using these resources as we move into the spring and create art to process our own identities, and reflect on phenomenal women, earth awareness, and many other topics!”

Reading About Our Role Models!
Funded Apr 5, 2017Thank you so much for our books! When my students came in to our new books on display they were thrilled and were immediately drawn to them for their independent reading time! As they read many of them made connections to books we had read previously and chose to share their books with others!
Personally I have loved having these books, using them to create engaging read alouds for my students that encourage them to become change makers. One of my favorite moments of this school year has been when I was able to gather my students around me and read "She Loved Baseball: The Effa Manley Story." We saw how Effa constantly stood up and fought when she thought something was unfair. My students instantly made connections to Rosa Parks and others. I was then able to encourage them to be like Effa, and work to make things fair.
I can't wait to continue using these books with my kids!”

Funded Feb 2, 2017My students LOVE our new photo printer! They get so excited and wait at the printer in anticipation of our photos coming out! When the pictures do come out, they love being able to decide where to put them, and then hang them up.
So far I've printed out pictures of students as they've moved up to the next reading level, students peacefully reading together in groups, and students celebrating other successes. I love being able to finally get the pictures off of my phone and being able to remind my students of all the hard work that they put in. It is a great visual reminder for all that they have been and all that they can be!”
