  • Let’s Clear The Air With An Air Purifier

    Funded Apr 1, 2019

Your donation is literally a breath of fresh air. As you can tell from our unboxing photos, my students were pretty excited to get something as simple as an air purifier. It prompted a conversation about the reasons we could use one, indoor versus outdoor air quality, and the potential drawbacks of having the appliance in the first place. It was like Christmas morning, but with a teachable moment built in!

Right now the filter is humming away, gently reminding me that there are wonderful people like you out there. Even though you may or may not ever visit my school, with every breath my students take, you are having an impact on their health and education. Thank you for your generosity, and have a wonderful summer!”

    Mr. Wolf

  • We Need Paper Towels

    Funded Apr 12, 2019

Thank you for stocking our classroom for the next several months of messes, drying hands, labs, and whatever else needs absorbent paper towels! It's a huge relief that as the budget for the current school year closes, we know that this one hole is filled both for the final months, and for the first several months of next year. As you can see from our photos, my students were excited to unpack just one of the ten boxes of paper towels that arrived. By supplying this basic need, you're taking the pressure off of families to provide the school with supplies that they sometimes can't afford themselves. You're showing students that someone out there cares for them and their education, that they and their learning are a priority. Thank you!”

  • Can't Print Without Ink! Printing Our Gardening Signs Part 2!

    Funded Feb 28, 2019

Since we received our color printer from Donorschoose, it has changed the way we publish our work, be it students' graphs and powerpoints, or the materials students use to learn every day. Since the printer was installed, we've gone through a lot of ink! Your donation of new cartridges is going to sustain us for a while. As you can see from our photos, students have put the ink to work right away, making presentations about biomes and the possibilities for farming in tundra and deserts instead of in critically endangered tropical rainforests. They loved being able to watch their creativity turn into a real, full-color page they could share with each other! Thank you for keeping great education going with your generosity.”

  • Dirt Abhors A Vacuum, But We Would Love One!

    Funded Feb 18, 2019

Thank you so much for bringing a little spic-n-span to my classroom. Since installing the vacuum, there's been less dust, less dirt, and overall a healthier environment for my students and I to teach and learn. As you can see from the photos, students were really excited to open this vacuum, and that enthusiasm has not waned in the days since. I have students asking me to use it, especially in the lead up to big events like parent night. During class, messes are gone in a matter of moments instead having to sweep up and still having lingering dust and dirt. Thank you for giving us a slick new way to do an essential job better. My healthier students and I thank you!”

  • Growing a Greener Future with Students, Seeds, and You!

    Funded Sep 24, 2018

The last couple of months have turned my classroom into a nursery. In the midst of our interdisciplinary project on food and culture, my students enthusiastically began planting herbs like cilantro, basil, parsley, sage, rosemary, and thyme. The first few days were rough - I could see how almost all of my students longed to see their seeds bursting forth with growth, only to be disappointed by another day of brown soil staring back at them. After a few short days though, and almost every day since, their arrival in my classroom has been filled with joyous calls like "It's growing!", boasts about "My plant is growing better than yours," or sometimes mournful cries that "my plant is dying!" What it all comes down to is the experience of growing plants has ignited passion and curiosity in my young scientists. Their next challenge when we return to school next week is for them to begin asking questions they can then test. The seeds, soil, and compost you donated will be used as they plan their own experiments to be able to boast that they grew the best basil of all.

Thank you for making excitement happen in my classes, and for fueling the imaginations of a new generation of scientists!”

  • Teaching Our Community About Sustainable Gardening in Living Color

    Funded Nov 27, 2018

This week, we unboxed your generous donation of a color printer, and I unveiled our color printing station for all of my students to publish their work. They're just beginning to learn how to make graphs on the computer, and it's exciting that their published presentations can match the color they've designed into their work. I'm thrilled, too that it's inspiring creativity in the representation of data. My students aren't just seeing data as dry numbers, but something that requires an artistic flair to draw people in and pique interest and thought. This is a tool we'll be using for years to come. Thank you for contributing something so important to my students' growth as scientists, artists, and thinkers.”

  • One Pencil Bag For A Whole Year Of Learning

    Funded Aug 23, 2018

One of the best parts of the school year is receiving new materials. The pencils are new and sharp, the colors on the pencil bags are bright and everything has that "new school supplies" smell. As the weeks pile on, pencils are used up and the bags get a bit dingy with use, but it's a sign that they're being used for something important. A few months into the year now, I look back on the pictures of the first day of school when I gave these supplies to my students, and I smile at the contrast to now. In a way, the fresh and new look of the first day compared to the slightly more worn look this month reflects how students themselves have changed. They are struggling as they grow as learners and people. The supplies you've given them sent the message from day one that someone cares about their struggle and their growth, and they're not in this alone. Thank you for being by my students' side all through this school year and beyond. Happy new year!”

  • Hats and Gloves Warm Our Heads, Hands, and Hearts.

    Funded Mar 27, 2018

A few weeks ago, students were visibly worried when I mentioned that the weather would be turning cold. It was not a problem though, because just as soon as I showed them the upcoming weather reports, I took out the gloves and hats you so generously donated. In just a few minutes, nearly every student in my classes had a set of winter clothing to keep them warm. It's a great feeling knowing that my teenagers will be able to handle the cold weather for the months ahead. Thank you for fulfilling this basic need through your donations! I wish you happy holidays and a wonderful new year!”

  • I Want To Go There - They've Got Good Snacks

    Funded Sep 17, 2018

The school year is underway and so are before and after-school activities. Early in the year, we've already begun to identify students whose home situations are far from ideal. We have at least one student taking care of a younger sibling all on his own, and another in a shelter since departing a toxic home situation. Homelessness, lack of a stable place to call home, or expectations that no teenager should be meant to shoulder, these are just the tip of the iceberg my students will have to deal with this year. Having the stability of a place to go before and after the school bell rings - math club, language academy, science challenge club, or senior mentoring - my students are showing up and they are well-fed thanks to you. Thank you for your generosity.”

  • Binders and Notebooks To Keep It Organized

    Funded Aug 29, 2018

Now, a month into the school year, the impact of your donation is truly being felt. On the first day of school, I handed every student a binder. On that first day, they began organizing their learning and that foundation continues to support what we do on a daily basis. Just this past week, I asked students to reflect on their learning over the past month about a project we called "Thinking Like a Scientist." When I asked them to look back at their work, almost every student could quickly find every piece of paper they had generated, and could identify something they did to answer the key questions of the project. I believe that because we started strong, with the right expectations, but equally importantly, the right tools provided by you - my students can focus on learning. Thank you so much for making this small organization dream of mine a reality!”

How do you learn science in a foreign language? My students, all of whom are recent immigrants, have the dual challenge of learning English at the same time they learn what they need to graduate high school. In my science class, I give them experiences they need to talk about - insects that won't behave, plants that grow without soil, Neanderthal skulls, and DNA from fish at the supermarket or even DNA from themselves. They ask questions, and we find out though experimenting together. In short, we DO science everyday, learning and practicing the language as we go. Please help keep our ambitions for a great education and a better life in America going with your support!
