  • Can You Hear Me? A Microphone Would Help!

    Funded May 10, 2023

Thank you for making my class this week fun and productive! We are learning about the impacts of food insecurity in our communities in New York, and my students have prepared presentations about their research. It is so refreshing to finally have good sound on our videos. It is like listening to the sonorous voice of a podcaster hearing these recordings. Simple pieces of equipment like this, a $40 microphone, can make the difference in how students see themselves and their work. Your donation is making a real difference in how my students' voices are heard!”

  • Evolving, Designing, Flying!

    Funded Jun 28, 2023

Thank you so much for this generous donation of supplies. My students have spent the introduction project of my science class learning about flight and building their own flying machines. We spent lots of time reading and journaling about the types of wings and bodies and the types of lives different birds lead. Most recently, students used these ideas and your materials to build and then improve their own designs about flight. Along the way, they learned many of the principles of flight such as the four forces (lift, weight, thrust, and drag), and the value of the engineering design process.

Without your generosity, these types of projects cannot happen. Thank you for bringing hands-on, authentic learning to my students!”

  • Creating Multicultural Unity & Racial Equity Through Genetic Research

    Funded Oct 22, 2023

This is amazing news, thank you for making this project possible. In just a few months, we will be opening our DNA lab for students to extract and amplify DNA from one another and from community members in an effort to answer the question, "Is Race Real?" We simply cannot carry out this work without donors like you. Thank you thank you thank you!”

  • Books for Seeing a Brighter and Birdy-er Future

    Funded Mar 30, 2023

Thank you for helping me build a classroom library of books about birds. I am thrilled that students have had access to the same sorts of books that ignited my passion for birds. Each time we get something new, be it a field guide or a story book, I am inspired to try new things with them. This time around, students were using these books for inspiration to build their own flying machines. We spent lots of time reading and journaling about the types of wings and bodies and the types of lives different birds lead. Most recently, students used these ideas to build and then improve their own designs about flight. Along the way, they learned many of the principles of flight such as the four forces (lift, weight, thrust, and drag), and the value of the engineering design process.

  • Gel Electrophoresis Separates DNA, but DNA Doesn't Separate Us

    Funded Oct 10, 2023

Thank you so much for choosing our project on race and DNA. I am hopeful that with a broader and more scientific perspective, my students can become the critical thinkers and leaders we need to dismantle systems of racism and discrimination. This is challenging but very rewarding work, and I am so thankful for your help in making it happen!”

  • Neuroscience Necessities: What's the Book on the Brain?

    Funded Mar 9, 2023

My students and I are really excited by the arrival of the books you donated. We are preparing experiments about their own questions in neuroscience - how music can affect our attention, how age or gender impacts muscle memory, or how someone's native language can influence their recall in a memorization task.

One of the most important things in experiments is that students research the problems and concepts behind what they want to know. After taking a copy of "How the Brain Works" from the library and sharing it with them, they were excited by its bold pictures, simple explanations, and large number of topics. Thanks to you, it is such a gift to have our own class set of this and these other engaging titles. I can't wait to see their love of science and the brain deepen this coming few weeks as they read and research more in the lead up to their experiments. Thank you for making this possible!”

    With gratitude,

    Mr. Wolf

  • Up-To-Date Tech for the Modern Classroom

    Funded Sep 29, 2022

Thanks to your generosity, a key piece of my job, technology, is no longer a pain to use when preparing for and teaching class. Before your donated computer arrived, it was a challenge to find enough space and processing power to prepare asynchronous videos, edit photos, and still have the computer ready to broadcast my lessons on the big board at the front of the classroom.

In the photos I sent, I am showing you just a few of the ways this powerful machine helps me be a better teacher. Students can be seen watching and rewatching videos about how to graph data from their experiments. Prior to being able to process all of these videos, I would have to teach each of the different lessons separately, and then I'd be playing a game of whack-a-mole, trying to get to everyone in the class as they get started on their work. Being able to record and edit high quality videos allows many of these things to happen simultaneously and lets students choose how they work and learn.

Some of these other photos show how this computer allowed me to do neuroscience experiments with the students in combination with another generous donation from Donorschoose. More than I can ever remember, my computer is the number one tool I need to prepare and teach. Your generosity has given me the latest tech, and a new lease on harnessing technology for years to come. From both my students and I, thank you.”

  • Talk To The Neuron: Neuroscience Tools For Tomorrow's Neuroscientists!

    Funded Sep 29, 2022

This past week was an incredible experience both for my students and me. We used several of the kits you donated to introduce structure and function of the nervous system. Something normally abstract and hard to visualize was made visible and memorable. We first recorded the activity of neurons in a cockroach leg, and demonstrated the ability of neurons to both send and receive electrical signals. Next students recorded the activity of their own neurons through the activity of their muscles. As you can see from the photos, students got to act as participants and observers in this study. Now from this experience they will get to prepare their own experiments on the brain. Thank you so much for making this toolkit available for us. It has changed the way I teach and changed the way they learn about their brains!”

  • Keep On Cutting With Replacement Cutting Tools

    Funded Jan 24, 2023

Happy new year to all of you, and thank you so much for helping restock our classroom supplies. My students and I are starting to learn about the nervous system and the brain, and are learning how to conduct original research experiments. The cutting tools you donated will help them design and cut out templates for painting and designing their own organ system textiles, and who knows what else along the way! I can't wait to share photos of my students and I using these tools. All the best to you and yours!”

  • Get the Learning Bug with Real Insects

    Funded Sep 29, 2022

Thank you so much for your donation of insects to our classroom. The cockroaches and bessbugs arrived to some skepticism. One student read the box, "Live: open immediately," and had her curiosity immediately piqued. Many others saw movement in the containers and said "no way," while more students inched closer. No matter their initial reactions, students are going to get to know these insects much better over the next few weeks. The cockroaches in particular are going to be utilized for our neuroscience exploration. We will use them to demonstrate the action potentials of neurons. Students are going to care for and learn from these critters for the rest of the year, and it is all because of you!”

How do you learn science in a foreign language? My students, all of whom are recent immigrants, have the dual challenge of learning English at the same time they learn what they need to graduate high school. In my science class, I give them experiences they need to talk about - insects that won't behave, plants that grow without soil, Neanderthal skulls, and DNA from fish at the supermarket or even DNA from themselves. They ask questions, and we find out though experimenting together. In short, we DO science everyday, learning and practicing the language as we go. Please help keep our ambitions for a great education and a better life in America going with your support!
