  • Biotechnology Tools for Tomorrow's Scientists

    Funded Dec 30, 2008

Thank you so much for your generosity. We are indeed a lucky school for several reasons, not the least of which is the belief that people like yourself have in our success. Your donation of these micropipettors will be put to quick use, and I can assure you from past experience, it will be put to very good use with our students. We recently completed a forensics unit where we used similar loaned equipment to extract and amplify genes that could be used to help solve a crime. Students who do not normally speak were engaged in arguments about who could or could not have committed a crime, just by using the evidence they themselves extracted with micropipettors. Seeing the transformation in these students was a wonderful thing. More of these moments will be made possible because of the freedom we will have with your gift. I look forward to sending you pictures and thank you notes from my students, a lucky group with a brighter future thanks to you.

    Sincerely,

    Jorda”

  • Biotechnology Tools for Tomorrow's Scientists

    Funded Dec 8, 2008

Thank you so much for this generous gift. My students are an inspiring group of young people who through their behavior remind me how simple and lovely the world is when you really boil it down. Sometimes they forget how the world and their education extend beyond the four walls of our classroom. In those times they can see what we do in school as somewhat less important. Several times now I have been able to come into school and show them a donation such as the one you made. When I show them the equipment and explain how a complete stranger bought it for them it refocuses what they do. Realizing that there are people they don’t even know who are invested in their education, they stop and remember that what we do in school is not just for them, but that they are responsible for the world at large. The epiphany seems to last for a short while, but trust me, when we get to use it and they are able to do things that were not possible before, I realize the epiphany is still there. Thank you from the bottom of our hearts. I cannot wait to send you pictures of your donation in action!

    Sincerely,

    Jordan ”

  • Measuring a Little DNA Goes a Long Way

    Funded Nov 25, 2008

Thank you so much for this generous gift. My students are an inspiring group of young people who through their behavior remind me how simple and lovely the world is when you really simplify it. Sometimes they forget how the world and their education extend beyond the four walls of our classroom. In those times they can see what we do in school as somewhat less important. • Biotechnology Tools for Tomorrow's Scientists

    Funded Sep 23, 2008

Thank you so much for your generosity. We are constantly having to rely on other organizations to lend this type of equipment. Your donation makes it possible for us to start to break free of narrow lending periods and lets us spend more time using the equipment. I'm excited to see the looks on my students' faces when they find out these materials were funded. With past donations, students have asked in a sense of disbelief, "Someone bought these for us?" I am pleased to yet again tell them yes, and to make the most of this gift and the opportunity now in front of them.

    A million thanks,

    Jorda”

  • DNA Electrophoresis for ESL/ELL Students

    Funded Dec 13, 2007

Thank you so much for your generosity. You've provided an exciting and important opportunity for our students that would not be possible without this equipment. We already have several activities lined up in February where our students will use this apparatus to compare their own DNA and analyze the proteins of bacteria they will be transforming in the classroom.

This is a leg up in high school and for the future college and science careers of an incredibly eager group of students. I can't wait to do this activity so I can send pictures to you! Thank you for making this possible.

  • Glowing Bacteria to Teach DNA to Immigrant Students

    Funded Nov 24, 2007

Thank you so much for the funds to buy our glowing bacteria kit. I attended a workshop this summer where teachers had an opportunity to use these materials. Teachers found the results astounding, so I am very encouraged that my students will find it even more exciting. You've helped make a wonderful contribution to a wonderful school. Thank you and happy holidays.

  • Plants Needed!

    Funded Oct 1, 2007

Thank you so much for your funding. I'm really excited to get these plants. Our compost bin has been attracting some fruit flies, so these plants should help clear some of those up! This unit on nature journals is almost over, but we will be utilizing the plants during our next 2 units.

As soon as we get some photos of the students working with the plants, I'll be sure to send them to you. Team Evolution/Revolution thanks you!

Thank you so much for your gift. We will be utilizing these critters right away this year, so I hope to have some great student work to share with you soon! My students and I thank you!

How do you learn science in a foreign language? My students, all of whom are recent immigrants, have the dual challenge of learning English at the same time they learn what they need to graduate high school. In my science class, I give them experiences they need to talk about - insects that won't behave, plants that grow without soil, Neanderthal skulls, and DNA from fish at the supermarket or even DNA from themselves. They ask questions, and we find out though experimenting together. In short, we DO science everyday, learning and practicing the language as we go. Please help keep our ambitions for a great education and a better life in America going with your support!
