  • Accommodating and Modifying Through Technology for ASD!

    Funded Oct 23, 2019

Working with students with Autism is a challenge I love. One of the biggest challenges I face is helping the students cover learning gaps in their education. These are skills that were not mastered by the student, making it hard for them to progress. I asked for these iPads to help me integrate technology into my curriculum. My job is to find ways to accommodate and modify the student education, so they can get the free and appropriate education they deserve. I have found that these iPad and the Osmos have been a huge help.

The iPads are used for multiple things. We use them for educational applications like ABC mouse and Osmo, to name a couple. Osmo is used for small group and sometimes even incentives. The students love playing the games, so much, that for social leisure they might get the opportunity to play with them. We even use Siri! Some of my students have trouble with Reading/Language Arts they use Siri to assist them spell and define works.

Without the help of My Donors, I would not be able to do so much with my students. Seeing them grow and learn daily is a privilege I wish to share with the world! These IPad can help me make that connection and show these students how technology can help them be whoever they want to be.”

    With gratitude,

    Mrs. Flores

  • Cooking in the Classroom!

    Funded Sep 23, 2019

Thank you for the opportunity to have these kitchen appliances in our classroom. The students I works with have Autism and are not exposed to many things like cooking. When I first introduced the concept of cooking, many of my students had never even made themselves a bowl of cereal. Due to their disability people tend to enable their needs instead of teaching them how to fend for themselves. My goal is to teach my student how to use everyday kitchen appliances to sustain themselves.

We had already started cooking in the classroom before we received the new appliances that I brought from home. The students were amused. They did not know what all the appliances did or how they worked. We spent the afternoon opening the packages and going over the function of each machine. It was an amazing experience to see how these students have never seen or heard of everyday appliances that are very useful for daily living.

We currently have a health class and this is when we usually cook. I teach the students the basics of nutrition and we use our kitchen to cook healthy meals. For the holidays we cheated a little a made pumpkin parfaits which are pictured on the page. The students love trying new foods and learning how to make them. This wouldn't be possible without your donation.”

    With gratitude,

    Mrs. Flores

At times, students are not comfortable in their standard school chair, which can easily distract him or her. Imagine a student with Autism, whose main distraction is their senses. A student with Autism might feel an impulse to "stim" or rock back and forth continuously. Flexible seating, allows me to accommodate the students to ensure their needs are met. It allows students to find a seat where they are most comfortable. Once a student is comfortable, it is easier to engage the student in a lesson or activity. Flexible seating has many benefits for the students including, decision making, collaboration, sensory input, etc. When giving students a choice to choose, they feel a sense of power; with this power comes responsibility. Once in a flexible seat, the student must follow rules and participate in the lesson or activity. Lastly, students will be fulfilling their sensory needs of stimming, bouncing and/or rocking back and forth.
