A variety of classroom seating options provides all my kiddos with a more inclusive and engaging learning environment, wherein each child is able to take ownership over their academic outcomes and maximize their learning potential!
Each seating option has been chosen with specific students, learning styles, and specific academic blocks in mind! The yellow stools will be used for both small group instruction and collaboration. Small group instruction is a vital block in our day, as it the time when I am able to meet with 6-8 students and provide differentiated instruction, specifically tailored to each student's specific learning goals for a given objective. Stools are able to be tucked neatly under my table when not in use, and moved easily to different locations so students can continue to collaborate while I work with other groups.
School can be stressful for our kiddos; we maintain high academic expectations, a long school day, and as first graders they are developing new emotional and social skills, gaining independence, and taking in important information about the world, every second! Furthermore, a lot of my kids come to school each day with life stressors from home that create added challenges to their school day. As a mechanism to help students learn to self-regulate and connect with their emotions, I have a "cool-down" corner, where students can go and choose to take deep breaths, hug a social-emotional character, use a sand timer, or fill out a reflection. The black lounger will be hugely beneficial for this area.
Group work is important as it helps my students learn teamwork, important social, as well as coping skills, and allows them to take on leadership roles, as well as build stronger more authentic connections to curriculum; the bean bag chairs will be a great choice for student collaboration!
