I am currently teaching in a low-income school in an inner city setting in Massachusetts. Our school's mission is to cultivate responsible, determined and respectful learners in an environment that promotes inclusion as it key feature. I teach physics and chemistry to classes of about 20 students of with a wide range learning abilities and challenges. Within the classes there is a mix of special needs students who struggle with attentiveness, reading, retention and regular attendance. The physics class that I teach is based on conceptual understandings first and math second. The students therefore need to get as much hands-on as possible to understand the physics in their world and hopefully enrich their scholastic experience enough to inspire a drive toward college, career and beyond.
