  • Graphic Novels to Tackle a Challenging Topic: the Holocaust

    Funded Jan 1, 2025

Wow! Thank you so much for your generosity. You fully funded this project in only one day!!

These books will be displayed prominently in our classrooms and immediately start getting read by students across all our eighth grade English classes as we launch our Holocaust unit. To further spur reading, students who pass a quiz on a Holocaust-themed book (including these new, accessible texts) will be able to earn their way onto a field trip to the Museum of Tolerance (a partnership, now in its third year, with our ethnic studies teacher).

Thank you again so much for supporting literacy, truth and justice.”

    With gratitude,

    Mr. Finer

  • Overhead Projectors are so 1960's!

    Funded May 13, 2012

Thank you so much for your generous donation of the Elmo document camera to my classroom. As a teacher of English, composition, and now this year, journalism, your donation has made an enormous difference to my young apprentice writers.

Now my students can truly see models of how a writer works and get feedback on their writing in real time. They can see directly how I take notes on a text, write a piece, or make revisions or edits to it. And then they can present their work to the class for immediate feedback at every step in the writing process.

These processes improve student writing and literacy skills and help to build a community of writers.

Thank you for not only enabling us to build this community, but for being a part of it.”

    With gratitude,

    Mr. Finer

  • The Perfect Novel for my ESL Students

    Funded Oct 1, 2007

Thank you so much for providing this opportunity for my students. You have not only helped to give them the chance to improve their reading skills, but also their engagement with their community and the world. Its not often that student needs and interests can neatly align with curriculum materials and the skills and standards we need to teach, but you've built this connection. Thanks again for supporting my students and our community”

  • Can You Believe Middle Schoolers Could Finish An Entire Marathon? Help Commemorate Their Run!

    Funded Apr 12, 2007

Thank you so much for helping to recognize the remarkable accomplishment of the student marathoners. The plaque with the finisher's photo will remind them and their families for years of what they can do when they set goals and work to achieve them. The plaques will also help encourage other students to follow this example and come out and train for LA Marathon 2008. Thanks again for supporting the team!

  • A New Story For A New School: Part I

    Funded Oct 20, 2006

Thank you for giving my students the opportunity to think critically about what it means to open this brand new school and apply the knowledge they have learned in the classroom to their own artistic endeavors. My students have eagerly awaited the start of this project, asking me everyday when they'll get the chance to use the cameras and show what the themes in this new school are. Now I have an answer for them, and eagerly await the chance to see their work. Thanks again”

  • A New Story For A New School: Part II

    Funded Sep 5, 2006

Thank you for providing this amazing opportunity for my students at this brand new school. Because of your generous gift, students will gain a deeper insight and a deeper role into the creation of a new institution, while learning fundamental English standards at the same time. I can't wait to get started and see their work, and be able to share it with you. Thanks again.

  • Reward My Heroes - Middle Schoolers Who Ran 26.2 Miles!

    Funded Jun 30, 2006

Thank you for sharing your generous spirit with my amazing students. No matter where these students go now (and some have moved on to high school or have transfered to other nearby schools), they will have a lasting and immutable reminder of their potential and perseverance, and their success in conquering such an amazing challenge. I'm excited about presenting them with this surprise as well as starting a new season with the runners, and your partnership in this adventure.

We will be sending you the full array of feedback in the fall, as a number of students are currently on summer vacation. Thank you again for your support!

My students are wonderful. There are many preconceptions about teaching in Los Angeles, especially when my school is carved out of a former factory next to train tracks littered with refuse. In defiance of all of them, every day I stand at my door and my room fills up with polite, gregarious, eager, and industrious sixth graders. They come with drafts in hand of stories, poems, and essays ready to be shared and discussed in my composition class. They have so much to say! They bring stories about the origins of their names, profiles of heroes like Captain "Sully" Sullenberger who landed a plane in a river, essays about problems in the neighborhood like dog-fighting and gangs, and poems about mixed-up animals like the "Pandaberry" and about the first time they went on a roller coaster or ventured to a store on their own. Every day, my students read, discuss and write their way to becoming better and more confident thinkers and communicators.
