  • Making Math Alive Using Counting Collections

    Funded Jan 7, 2022

Thank you for your generous donation as it enabled me to acquire resources that will help my students who struggle in numeracy or in mathematics. I was able to acquire materials that I need to organize my math manipulatives and make them as my Counting Collections materials.

Kids love to count things. This is a simple exercise, but a great way to get kids excited about arithmetic. Counting Collections also seeds ideas about how the place value system helps make counting work. Counting Collections is a foundational structure you can come back to again and again.

Counting Collections is a structured opportunity for children to count a collection of objects. Depending on students' concepts of counting, they might count the items one-by-one or skip-count by groups. After children have organized and counted the collection they record how they counted. While students are working students share their counting strategies, problem-solving strategies, highlighting efficient strategies that are being used, discussing recordings, and supporting partners to work together meaningfully. These activities lend themselves not just to counting but to collaboration, communication, and critical thinking skills, all 21st-century skills needed by our students today.

My students need extra resources as they struggle in reading, numeracy, and in developing the English language. It is because of your generosity that my students are able to get excited about learning. I hope you continue to support public education and teachers who have made careers in touching students' lives. We make a difference but you have supported us in making that difference!”

    With gratitude,

    Mr. Reyes

  • Interactive Technology in Literacy and Numeracy

    Funded Jan 7, 2022

Thank you very much for your very generous donation as it enabled me to acquire a piece of technology that is now becoming vital in the classroom, i.e., the digital interactive whiteboard. Unlike other digital interactive whiteboards, this one is very handy, easy to use and install, portable, and also five to ten times cheaper than the regular digital interactive whiteboards.

This piece of technology makes everything accessible to students. My laptop is connected to the projector and everything shown on my laptop can be shown in the projector and can be manipulated by this piece of technology. Any surface can be transformed into a touch screen because of this piece of technology. I am able to show videos, PowerPoint presentations, interactive games, and other online applications by touching the surface the images are projected on. This makes everyone excited as a screen becomes alive to students. Students are able to interact with the projected images as if they are interacting with a giant iPad.

My students need extra resources as they struggle in reading, in numeracy, and in developing the English language. It is because of your generosity that my students are able to get excited with learning. I hope you continue to support public education and teachers who have made careers in touching students lives. We make a difference but you have supported us in making that difference!

    Thank you very much!!!”

  • Technology for Intervention Classes

    Funded Sep 29, 2021

Words are not enough to express y heartfelt gratitude. Donors like you are the reason why Donors Choose exists. The agency can not help us, teachers, without generous donors like you. Times have been tough especially made more difficult by many students getting sick and many students missing out on instruction. We have to look for more resources, materials, and equipment that will make our instruction more relevant to the ever-changing needs of our students.

Your gift of donation enabled Donors Choose to send my students a projector and a Bluetooth speaker. Teaching with our masks on keeps everyone safer for in-person instruction but also poses another challenge on how to teach phonics - the production of sounds with the correct formation of the mouth. Through the use of a projector and Bluetooth speaker, I can show videos of how to form the mouth and the tongue in the correct production of sounds during reading and phonics instruction. I have to weave in multimedia presentations to make instruction relevant to their needs. These are now a necessity.

I also use these when teaching newcomers English as a Second Language (ESL), students coming from various countries. The use of online applications helps me teach students to unlock vocabulary and to become more proficient in speaking English.

I would like to say thank you again and I do hope for your continued support of teachers. It is donors like you that make our job easier. Thank you!”

    With gratitude,

    Mr. Reyes

  • Tech for Non-Techies

    Funded Dec 20, 2016

Words are never enough to convey our thanks to your generous donation. Your donation has helped me overcome one of the challenges teaching a Title 1 school, a school with families living under the poverty level. Because of your generosity, my students are able to access the Internet for research and for accessing online resources tied to our curriculum. The students are able to work together and collaborate using technology. Social skills are even more enhanced since each student has to wait for their turns, communicate and negotiate as to when they take their turns, important but often neglected skills.

The students are even more excited because of the unique features of these machines. The touch screen and multiple ways to set up the Chromebook make these easy for me to tweak to my individual students' needs and physical limitations. They are now able to access online educational games that allow me to make sure they master the skills and the content required but in a non-threatening way.

All my students have been waiting eagerly for their turns as all of them want to use these two Chromebooks. They all say we need more but I keep telling them that Google.org should spread its generosity to the most number of classrooms it can reach and change.

Again, thanks for your generosity. You have done a difference in the lives of not only 10 children with autism but to their families as well. Their parents keep telling me how eager they are to go to school all because of the technology enhanced instruction!”

    With gratitude,

    Mr. Reyes

We finally got the tablet!!!!!! Although we had to wait for 5 months to get the requested tablet (due to backorders with the vendor), we finally received this important and new piece of technology this month of May. The students were all excited to see this precious gift from you, our donors. No words can express how grateful we are for this generous donation. Our thanks too for the staff of DonorsChoose for being patient with us whenever we inquire about the status of our project.

I started looking for apps that my students can use and see how we can utilize this to the fullest. I started downloading games which became a motivating tool for my students. I am slowly introducing school / curricular related apps so students will still have fun not knowing they're reviewing important lessons they have learned. I have also downloaded a speech therapy app that some of my students can use for their speech therapy sessions.

With budget cuts, not everybody can have a laptop, a digital camera, a video game console, and a video camera per student. Having all these features in one tablet saved our school money, money we ndo not have but because of your generosity, my students are now learning how to use these features for their class projects.

    Thank you very muc”

    With gratitude,

    Mr. Reyes
